As of the 29th July Sony Ericsson have begun the roll out of the Xperia X10's Android2.3.3 update, the FW has already been rooted by some devs and Wolfbreak already has 2.3.3 Custom ROM based on the stock SE version but with his TW tweaks and 30FPS Cap off.

To think nobody even thought this phone would get Froyo, here we are a year later,its officialy sitting ahead of even the Desire in terms of Android version, excellent work by SE.

Hi guys,

Anyone had success getting the update here yet?
 
If it goes along the same lines as the last update. Will be about 1-2 weeks before we get it here in SA. Has to do with the networks allowing the update I think.
 
got the update last night (UK Generic) ...so far so good.
Fast and smooth, and battery life seems longer. (could be a placebo effect)
 
ok... it's here!

Phone eventually detected the update and said I needed to use the PC to update but when connecting to PC Companion it told me that I already had the latest software. I think this may be because my phone was rooted? Way around this was simply to select the repair option.

Now running Android 2.3.3 (3.0.1.g.0.75) and it's all very nice.

Screen resolution seems much better and icons are all so much sharper. Only had the upgrade for about half an hour now and still in the process of re-installing and configuring apps (K9 Mail and the like) but everything seems quicker.

So far so good!
 
My X10i is on 2.1 (not rooted), says "Your phone is up to date".

Tried to do the repair, now I just have a blank phone with no Gingerbread?
 
I got the Wolfbreak one, with some tweaks. Seems pretty cool so far, finally the stock Camera app is working again. Vignette is a great app but takes forever to load and process photos. So far the best thing is the cool animation when the screen turns off. I can't believe this is from the same Sony Ericsson who told us to get ****ed a few months ago when we wanted Froyo.

Edit: Also the new Market is pretty damn ossum, except for being a bit laggy.

My X10 went in for repair 2weeks ago, finaly coming back from SSS tomorrow, 1st thing im doing is flashing it to 2.3.3 then i will give Wolfbreak's ROM a go. :)

Indeed, they have come a long way, i remember how much hate ths phone in paticular got in forums due to lack of updates, now ithas leaped rigth to the front, whilest many are stuck on 2.2 Froyo.

Yes, but they already lost out on sales. Everyone bought Desires instead, (even though in most aspects it's a lesser phone) because the X10 got a reputation as "the phone with the outdated OS" and later "the phone with hardware not capable of multi-touch". Neither of which applies anymore.

+1, indeed.

Personally, when SE had initially announced that the X10 would'nt go further than 2.1 i still didnt want the Desire, not only is it a "lesser" phone, it is one of the most hideous smartphones ive ever had the displeasure of laying my eyes on, i just couldn't bring myself to like it, thought of the Galaxy S but that had GPS, battery and slowdown issues which required multiple patches and what not, was so relieved when SE changed their minds, X10 could finaly be the phone it really was meant to be, shame it took them long to bring it to that.
 
I generally say that there is no best phone, it completely depends on what's best for the individual and his or her desires.

That said I could not resist commenting on this SE fanboy post.

Wow that's funny, not sure how you came to that conclusion. So many people swapped their X10s for Desires because of the laggyness and the lack of multitouch of fantastically plastic X10. The 2 glamourous features of the X10, mediascape and timescape proved to be nothing but gimmicky. The X10 lacks a radio. The Desire has almost double the RAM. Not to mention the Desire's AMOLED screen blows the X10s TFT screen out the water, for kicks, open up the same image on both devices and compare the colors. Not to mention gorilla glass finish.

So what does the X10 have over the Desire? More space for apps? A sleeker, more plastic finish?

The screen has lower resolution, is totally useless outside, and makes some colours screwed up ie. grey showing a pinkish tint. Those old-skool AMOLED's were crap, marketing just tried to convince people that new=better. They're a far cry from the new Super AMOLED's, one reason why even the Desire went back to TFT displays later.

It doesn't have Gorilla Glass, that's the Galaxy, the Desire has just plain glass. It has a much lower resolution camera without a flash, its fugly and has less storage than the X10 which already is a bit on the low side. The reason I said in almost all aspects is that the Desire does have more RAM. Although it's 33.33% more whereas "almost double" would be close to 100% more but yes easy mistake to make. 33.33% is very close to 100 after all. An FM receiver is nice too, but honestly my last 3 phones had it and I never used them. No fanboying, just facts.

X10 had a far better Camera, proper 16:9screen ratio, a larger display that was useable in direct sunlight (as sadi by TJ99, those 1st gen touch AMOLEDs were crap, all marketing hype, i had both a N8 for a month and a friends Desire to help him with getting to grips with Android), far more app memory which despite being 2.3 is still a big requirement, better design, larger battery with better battery life, oh and the X10 had a Mineral Glass display, just as strong as Gorilla glass. RAM, FM Radio and an update to Froyo were all the Desire truely had over the X10.
 
I had the N97, the Nokia flagship, they gave up on it and left loyal users with a pricey and buggy phone. X10 is old and still got Gingerbread, good work SE, and that the just of it.
I still dont have the update though?
My X10 isnt rooted yet, thinking of doing the Wolfbreak ROM, is it stable and worth it? Whats the best way to root X10 on 2.1? So I can do the Wolfbreak ROM?

The fact that you "cant read in sunlight" is bogas. Try turning the brightness up, I've been able to read in the sunlight with brightess on high for the last year.

Yes the X10 is 54 pixels wider, 800 x 480 is very standard, it's definitely a lot wider than iPhone, maybe not quite 16:9 ratio.

According to GSMArena, the HTC Desire has Gorilla glass.

When I was chosing between the 2 I was also hearing bad things about SE's kb. Not to mention the infrared track pad on the select button.

HTC Sense is also arguably a better overlay on Android, they've worked hard on the widgets and applications that comes with Sense.

But anyway they are both great phones, the X10 is sexier but the Desire does have a subtle sexiness to it. I hated that clock which is just a widget, first thing I did was get rid of that damn clock.
 
And over a week later and as expected we are still waiting for the update to be released for us.
 
And finally a couple weeks later there is the generic ZA X10 update available.

I ended up going for the Wolfbreak ROM, phone much quicker en better battery life
