xrdp on ubuntu 12.04

hi guys,

I dont know much about Linux and I want to learn more so i am "renting" a VPS from webafrica.

i want to use some form of remote desktop and so far i am failing.

i think i've setup xrdp and vncserver on the linux side correctly but when i try to rdp from winXp remote desktop connection or realvnc's vnc viewer it give me errors.

i've read 100 tutorials but nothing seems to help.

the message i get from winrdc is "Because of a protocal error at the client (code 0x1104), this session will be disconnected." and from vncviewer it's "RFB protocol error: reading version failed: not an RFB server?".

Any ideas?

bump. also, does anyone rent a VPS with a preinstalled Linux GUI that i could remote desktop to. it seems silly to not be able to do this.

One normally uses Linux servers without a gui and uses SSH (command line) or cpanel or other web interfaces if for web hosting.

So if you determined to get to a gui and learn Linux, then Im not sure why the expense of a hosted server is necessary?

But to get your original question, I am thinking the errors you have is because you don't have a gui installed on the server.

Can you please give more details on what version of linux is installed and if webafrica installed a gui by default?

@nic777, point taken but the VPS is relatively inexpensive and I was hoping to use it concurrently for bitcoin mining.

the version installed is ubuntu 12.04, and the gui was not installed by default. I added the [ubuntu-desktop] package, which i hope is correct...? also tried xubuntu desktop.

Tried No Machine's FreeNX last night but now it tells me that the connection has been refused. Not sure if that is related or not...

Also, would WA have to open specific ports outside of the VPS's firewall (which is off). IE: they force the use of port 5252 for SSH. I am trying 22, 3389, 5252, 8888 to connect via Realvnc, freenx, windows rd, without any difference.
