Xsan and Xserve

Promise RAID Firmware

thanks, reading around and talking to promise initially it seems that the firmware adds support for Xsan 1.x and OSX 10.4 failover/failover configuration and that it "certified" by apple. I suppose you could chuck your own drives and build the RAID 6 and it will work with Xsan 2 and OSX Server 10.5 but then it is not "certified apple".

I will see what the engineers from promise say if this the risk is too high or if the firmware upgrade is a simple process on the drive modules etc.

well, we getting an original promise raid sometime next week, gonna try it with xsan 2 and see what happens.....its quite a bit cheaper so would be nice if it worked

that would be great if you could share your findings, having the firmware compatibility is useful but for considerably less money as well as the waiting period I'd rather get a stock Promise if the throughput and installation is relatively similar to the Apple firmwared Promise.

Promise

Did you have an opportunity yet to test the unit and run a few bandwidth tests. Wonder if the firmware makes a big a difference as stated.

only used the original promise raid with xsan 2, tests were very very impressive, 1 head unit and 1 expansion gave us 5 Hd streams at the same time at +-(145MB/s). I have yet to try the non apple units

Promise Raid's from Apple are now Silver with Blue and Green flashing lights... like the old Xraid...

I wont lie... I missed those flashing little buggers..

*oh and they come with 1TB modules instead of the 750GB

That is pretty cool, now if they released an enterprise server that could actually do enterprise work it would be awesome.....
The promise raid was a great move to be honest, they are pretty impressive.

A note to anyone who might be using this, the promise slowly has performance degradation if you do not plug in both management ethernet interfaces....as to why? Who the F knows, but it happens
