Ok, so I've got a SD PVR, and decided this morning its time for a HD PVR, running Xtraview on them.

Off to Makro to buy the PVR, they went to check stock, and the salesguy returns with an installer rep in tow.

I told him what I want to do, and keep in mind I've already got dish, cables and everything installed, just need the additional PVR and activate Xtraview. The Rep reckons me it will be R1220 to install. I told him he must p!ss off, I am not paying that to have a multiswitch and 3 cables plugged in.

He said it is due to the fact that you have to enter a password for Xtraview to work, and only installers have the password.

This smells like BS to me?

Needless to say I just left

I activated xtraview sommer over the phone ... the installer password is 9949.

Yeah, call the multichoice contact centre , when they activate extra view the send a "password " that displays on screen to verify that the connection is setup correctly, etc , seems that macro guy is bull****ing

That he was. I would contact the store manager and complain about it

I think they are confused, my parents had a normal DSTV decoder, and when they got an HD-PVR, need to change the LNB, cost about R900, maybe that's what they mean? But, if you have a PVR decoder and/or Xtraview already, this shouldn't be necessary, afaik.

R900 for a new LNB?!?

Got a quad feed lnb from space satellite in Randburg, was under R300, and 5 minutes if my own time to change it,

Yeah, that in itself is a rip off. I use HD Cabling in Centurion for these kinds of things normally

While on the PVR topic: which is the better one. The mini (Pace I think) or the bigger Altech one? I know the functionality is the same, I am more referring to component and build quality

The sales reps at Makro are getting scalier by the day. Every time I buy tech there they have some new scheme or extended warranty to sell me.

Pace 2P currently... New HD box coming soon.

I was charged for a larger dish. When I upgraded.

Why did u need a larger dish?

were you having problems with the old dish? Signal loss with slight rain / cloud cover etc. or maybe a very old and warped dish.

If not, then you were ripped off. Only thing that needed to change was the LNB as you would need 2 instead of the 1 cable... Or for extra view 4 instead of 2 cables

there are many scaly installers out there. Even approved because they have the right connections. They will sell you stuff that is not needed just to inflate the price so that you think it's worth having them out.
