That seems to have done it - thanks! :)

I'm probably going to go for the 8.10 but at least I'm in. I'm also going to be giving it a try on my netbook but we can keep that to ourselves - no point giving wizard something to gloat about ;) :p

I've found walkthrough's for both so hopefully not :D but I'll be sure to let you know if/when I do. . .

I wouldnt mind figuring out how to image the existing installation just in case I need to do a roll back.

i have 2 ext3 partitions backed up with partimage due to an impending repair on my laptop (which required me to reinstall Vista off the recovery disks). In any event it gives a warning that it cannot work on mounted drives. Which becomes an issue with your root and home partition. I suppose you could run it off a livecd.

Probably not - netbook - unless that also translates to a liveUSB? :confused:

I cant figure out why they put such a large (120gb) hdd in a netbook.
 
Acronis backups linux and windows and mac file systems fine. Does great imaging, compression and has loads of useful features.

I think I posted a "liveUSB" for you. You get both a Linux and Windows executable from which you can create it. PM me if you have issues with that.
 
OK - pppoeconfig - how do you enable/disable it? Say I'm at home and want it running but when I'm at the office I want to use the office router's connection?

I am assuming you have done the pppoeconfig with a local and/or international provider. To switch it on, I usually use "pon local" or "pon intl". To switch it off, use "poff <local/intl>".

Yeah, pppoeconf. :)
Do the following when doing the whole setup:
pppoeconf
<follow instructions>
go to /etc/network/interfaces and change the "provider" to local/intl
go to /etc/ppp/peers and rename "provider" to local/intl, then edit it and change it according to local/intl (see kubuntu split routing thread).
then after this you can use the ppp. I am assuming you do have a routing table script ready? if not, I can send you a pretty decent one that I use. I do use the router for intl and a ppp for local though, so all my static routes are set to "ppp0".

Yeah . . . I seem to have lost wifi altogether now in Ubuntu so I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to try all this. :o
