The news is inundated with Microsoft’s possible acquisition of Yahoo and it’s starting to read a bit like a soap opera.
Yahoo is the damsel in distress needing to be courted properly before falling into bed with the wealthy but powerful knight in shining armour – Microsoft.
Unfortunately this particular damsel has thus far failed to respond to Microsoft’s overtures but it seems that the two finally got it together last week in a meeting reportedly held in Silicon Valley.
It seems that Yahoo’s stubborn rejection has caused its shareholders to launch two lawsuits to try and forced the Board to accept Microsoft as their new bedfellow … the ploy seems to have worked because they are now at least in talks.
For my part I’m all for this partnership. It may not be the happiest marriage ever but it’s a necessary joining of forces to combat the growing influence of Google which to my mind has become a monopoly.
Google has done a fantastic job of creating a top notch search engine and they offer me great value for money but they are becoming too powerful.
Their very clever marketing department has sent out a smoke screen that they have our best interests at heart … remember that smeltzy ‘Do no evil’ slogan. But at the end of the day they are just another big corporation with shareholders who need to see continual growth.
It’s not possible for them to retain their squeaky clean image whilst still squeezing the blood from the online industry.
I want an alternative and the only two forces big enough in the Internet game are Yahoo but they need the backing of a big gun – Microsoft is as good and as big as any other.
