Ok, I have decided to pimp my Yaris a bit.
I need to get a whole set of Mag Wheels and Tyres.
I need advice on this one. I prefer to get it from a legit (reputable) retailer like your Tyger Wheel & Tyre, etc. I want to know what size should I get (Yaris Hatch) - is the 17" ok? I also dont have a big budget (around 2-3 grand). What are the current specials going around? I know I can just pop in the shops and find out but I thought its better to first get some inout from you guys so that I appear to know what:D I want when I approach them.

What area are you in, if in PTA, get down to Malas in Pta town, much cheaper than Tiger Wheel & Tyre, and i think the selection is better at Malas.
They always have some sort of specials going on.
you need to get 17" mags, and tyres 205-40-17's for a Yaris is fine.
But 2-3 grand is a bit of a push for 17's and tyres
Donot buy anything in the 16" range.

Do they have good prices on tyres or are the big boys squeezing them?

I never buy tyres from anyone else because they always beat the rest in my opinion, the last time i had to buy new tyres for my 330i, i got the factory fitted Conti Sports from them which no one else had or who ever had was more expensive.

Give them a go, hell you can even negiotiate with them

As long as you're aware that you should NOT change the rolling diameter of your wheels. Most people who "pimp" cars neglect this little detail and put on the biggest rims they can find, trying to make a cheap family car look like a sports car and failing miserably. Standard Yaris tires are 165/65/14 so going 205/40/17 as suggested will change your diameter by 13mm. That's way too big. It means your gear ratios are off and your speedometer will be out. *sigh* but I suppose that doesn't really matter... As long as it looks "cool", right?

Point taken Noct, I would never let them do anything that could cause safety issues. Good point man, you see why I started by asking the forumites.

Ride height and quality will be hampered, stopping distance will be longer, performance will be hampered due to extra weight. Fuel consumption will change but not much to worry about on a trusty Toyota.

On the other hand, handling will be much better, better control is rainy conditions and there is much more tyre on the surface. and the ride will look sweet:D

Yep. Anyone know type dealers like Malas from around the rest of the country?? (See above)

I am putting together a dbase of these type of dealers that can offer better prices for all of us for my new site.:)

Koenig Wheel Warehouse have a few branches, 9 in Gauteng, 2 in Western Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga

hmmmm It isnt that bad as you make it.

There are so many cars riding around with lower profile tyres. It has its pros and cons. I think the pros outweigh the cons. If it were that bad, then there wouldnt be a market for lower profile tyres.

Im currently riding on 40 profiles, upgrading to 19 and trying to find the lowest profile i can get.

There is that old argument about, ''if the car was made for 19'' it would come out with 19''s''.

Who cares, if it fits - i say fit it. Not doing any serious damage to your car - sure you would have to replace bearings sooner, but those are things that one would have to replace anyway as time goes on.

Bearings? Hehe... There's a whole lot more that gets muddled by changing size. For instance, fitting a bigger diameter wheel means the car has to work a lot harder to start moving but you'll get a higher top speed. Also, wider tires mean more grip but possible rubbing on the arches and a higher fuel bill. You'd be amazed at the fuel difference! Also, getting a fine when you "think" you're doing 120 but the camera says 140 won't be fun.

I always laugh at the guys with the Ballade and Tazz's running 18/19 inchers. It looks ridiculous and I don't ever want to ride in that car. After 30 minutes your kidneys probably start coming out your mouth! Not to mention speedbumps! But, to each their own! :)

They also make HUGE turbo chargers which some people install on small engines. 1000cc that makes 500+ BHP. There are a lot of those cars around so why doesn't everybody do it? Same reason everyone doesn't fit larger wheels. ;)

Almost every single car i have owned in my life had bigger wheels. Not once was the speedo out. Not once. I have been on countless dyno's. So you wrong there. Maybe you were misinformed. I have experience with it, so i know.

I belong to a racing club, so i know hundreds of people with souped up cars, not once was their speedo ever out due to fitting a bigger wheel.

If you fit a wheel without a decent lowering kit, then you can expect a hard ride. As i said in an earlier post, invest in a decent kit. The ride quality will be great.

Fitting a wheel, and rolling the arches is no big deal. Fuel bill, lol. Even without the bigger tyres, you will still complain about the fuel bill.

So what were the real problems you said that was going to happen? What about better handling? Is that a con in your books?

You have a GPS maybe? Try compare that to your speedo.

I actually thought about this as I was driving home. I agree with you that a new suspension setup is cool and bigger wheels = better handling but the thing is, not everyone is a race driver. I've been considering fitting a pair of KONI FSD dampers and Eibach ProKit springs to my car but at the end of the day, that's R10 000+ and how often will I actually be using it to it's full potential? People who never track their cars really don't need to go all-out on standard components. If you drive a M3/RS4/C63 etc, then cool. If you drive a Fiesta... Odds are you're a regular driver with regular driver needs.

Just my 2c.

Edit: kokop: Pleasure. Looking for a decent set of 16" tires myself, so I've been phoning all over the place. ;)

It all boils down to different driving styles, different strokes for different folks at the end of the day.

Going bigger wheels, and not lowering your car, your car's handling will be pathetic. It will also look like a 4x4. So i would say that if someone does go bigger, the lowering kit will really be an investment.

You can pick up a very good kit for 2.5k. No need to spend 10k.

That is the key thing you would have to modify the suspension somehow, either with a lowering kit or spring with different spring rates.
I agree with you R2D2 that it would never be off by a big value 20Km/h or something.
What is could do is better or worsen the under/over read error your mechanical/electric speedo has, elcetronic speedo's would adapt to give the correct rate.
