Just wanted to start this thread to get other's opinions on the current state of the news servers.

I used to be uber impressed with the speed of the saix news server... but only after hours. Despite only allowing two threads, I got in excess of 300kbps on my 4Mbps line. Now at best it is around 100kbps... and only after hours - day time is pathetic.
Anyone else getting that?

I decided to give IS another go... why did I bother... right now it's taken over 3 hours to download 30Mb. It's crawling at just under 4kbps... absolutely pathetic. If it doesn't improve at all, then I have to say it's just not worth the money. I'm not sure what it will look like after hours... anyone else care to comment?

So the verdict is SAIX is a far far better buy if you actually plan on downloading 20Gb or more a month. IS... well, I dunno if it's possible to do that even with a dedicated machine fired up 24x7 on a 4Mbps line... it's crazy slow....

Any suggestions or comments now that the SAIX local bandwidth 'promotion' is in swing?
 
My 2 cents ...

I rate we need a forum, where a whole bunch of people who want to download get together (obviously people with similar tastes in what they download) and they then line up requests that everyone is happy with and then delegate items to each member to be cached. It can be done in an orderly fashion, with people having to have there things cached at different times I.E caching can be delegated to be done uniformly over the month, so the rest of the crowd can grab the cached stuff while it's still cached (which isn't very long).

This will be on a smaller scale than newshost, and I guess on a much more personal level, as people with similar tastes would be involved.

The thing is, news servers are almost by definition all about leeching so when it comes to helping with caching many people don't !

This would work best on SAIX, you could have people caching things during the faster speeds at night, and the crowd grabbing that cached stuff during office hours.

This would require some co-ordination, but I think it could work quite well :p
 
Is caching a problem with SAIX? I thought they mirrored Giganews? As per my 400kbps downloading to start with I assumed everything was cached locally.
 
Well you can download things that are "cached" on SAIX news server at full speed (384 kbps line) during office hours when un-cached things come down very slowly, so it's definitely something that can be used.

Ok... that's interesting... I've never been able to download very quickly during office hours but have been able to after hours (until recently)...

I assumed they started throttling their server... I haven't seen a 300kbps+ download in a couple of months. What happened to newshost.za.net? Is it not what you are describing, and are people still using it?

Just a quick note, the SAIX news server and IS news server do not work the same, the SAIX server has NO caching system whereas the IS server HAS a caching system. This means that if you download content via the SAIX server, DO NOT report it as cached/uncached as that means NOTHING. Newshost was designed with the IS server in mind, the caching ONLY applies to the IS server. Have a great weekend. :)

The Cached Browse Section is intended for NZB's that are cached on the LOCAL IS/SAIX News Servers.
This means, most of the time, that you will download content at your full ADSL line speed.
If you find that something doesnt appear to be Cached anymore please notify an Admin so they can
move the NZB to the Uncached Section.

This comes from the NewsHost FAQ !!!

There are lots of people using NewsHost, but unfortunately not all are contributing to helping caching. Helping caching is the only solution to the problem that is in our hands to make happen, if we sit and wait for an upgrade it may never happen :)
