Year End Functions

Never had it that extravagant but have had a similar experience of an external company treating me better than the one i work for.
The one I worked for actually did similar, not quite as extravagant but they tried. They were smaller so didn't have the resources.
They did take us for booze cruises, also come to think of it the one year at a game farm.

Thing is you can see when they tried weather it's big budget or small. Big corporates are the worst small one time bands most of the time really try.

I don't mind going as long as it's in work hours and they pay for everything (paying for yourself is whack lol).

Company I work for now always has it in work hours and have lots of food and drinks. Only complaint I have is the music is always too bloody loud. Can't have a conversation with my colleagues and seeing that I'm from out of town, I would like for it to be a little more social.

Back in the day when I was a contractor, one of my customers used to include me in their year ends, man this place went all out. One year it was a massive circus, another year was the entire barnyard theater booked out, my last year they booked the Riveria hotel and we went on booze cruises.
Used to work for an investment bank on a trading floor. Those guys also went all out. Book out a nice big venue. After hours but partners included. Top notch unlimited food and soft drinks. There was a limit on high end booze but normal Laagers etc I think were unlimited (I don't drink so did not pay that much attention). Live bands, stuff like that. Really amazing. On top of that they would have a kids Christmas party on a Saturday in December for staff members with children. Huge quad at the head office would be filled up with jumping castles, fair rides, face painters, food stalls, etc. All free. Kids had a blast. Ended a decade or so back though. Cost cutting and all that.

At most companies these days if people leave, they expect others to pick up the slack.

Happened with us but oddly we're far faster and more efficient without the 2 staff members we lost. Enjoying the extra work too (sadly no extra pay).

They can go fly a kite. Can't make it compulsory, otherwise claim over time :)
Was a small company with very overbearing owners. Made life difficult if you don't tow the line the way they want. Literally got the impression they were so busy getting rich they didn't have friends so their employees had to be their friends.
Never attended any of their year end functions

This is the big issue I have. Can't talk.

The biggest ( I still never attended) was Sun City was hired out.

Two corporates I used to work for went all out, was after hours usually and no partners, but was not bad.

Currently employer was doing ok, then disappointed I couple of years ago, I so I declined last year and took leave (function is usually during working hours). Was considering the same this year, but could justifiably decline this time, as I am on a work trip on the date.

2 slice pizza and 2 beers while billions rolling in.
.

Ja, no staff party since COVID, guess they figured they could save a few bux.
Same, so management implemented a fine system for procedure failures and used the money for a braai at year end. Also implemented the selling of waste to scrap yards and used that money off the books for more regular braais. The last one the budget was just under a R100 a person and with that we could do a braai which included chips, cooldrinks, boerewors rolls, steak, chicken, salad and ice cream cones for everyone and there was leftovers even after seconds
