Yearly increases

Time to jump ship it seems
a 60 year old white male does not have many options to change employers, especially in my field of expertise. Not many employers out there looking for people that can maintain, repair, calibrate etc. among others a constant wave cavity ring-down spectrometer or a magnetic sector mass spectrometer. I'm planning to leave the company end of November after 40 years of service.

Hmmm, seems interesting enough, need someone to take your place?

Two random points:
- Company's that make their money from international sales/income should be able to do better that 6%, due to the weaker rand...
- There seems to be a trend that younger employees change comapanies about every 2 years. We typically don't hire people who do this.

I got 5% from my international company. Not great considering all the overtime I put in.

Never take a counter...if u do, you are a bigger criminal than your employer
Hah this is funny. No, sometimes a counter is fine, I think. The nice thing for me is that if the new place doesn't work out for me, I still have that counter to go back to.

Alot of people are going to be shocked when they hear I earn R6 500 as an 'accountant.' Yeah I could've gotten maybe R10 000 at a mid sized firm (no CTA so no big 4) but the reality of it is there are lots of benefits where I work and one which I value above all is that there is no overtime AT ALL
Anyway, my opinion is that in todays time, a degree is not the way to go. A side hustle along with an 8-5 is a must or a full time business
You could get away living a mediocre life with a degree but very few actually earn big with their degrees. That's just my thoughts but hey what do I know. I'm still in my early 20s
As a counter point. My first job was R23k p/m back in 2013. Degrees do matter

I was around R20k/m in ‘98/‘99, with a degree. It was ~2x what my university peers were being offered.

My overtime is unpaid.
Raised the issue in Jan as I'm working tons of overtime.
Issue has not been officially even responded to.
And then got the 4% letter last week.

A starting salary of over R1K was almost unheard off when I started my employment path. Only those with masters degrees and PhDs was offered that. I started with RR650 p/m in 1983.

Real inflation is the rate of increase of prices that affect you, and not the general population of SA.

thats not real inflation, real inflation is the rate of increase in the money supply

Overtime is only a thing if agreed to and under a certain salary. Otherwise it's all up for negotiation

Damn, and they paying you in Rands? I'm at a local company, but all sales income is foreign.
Sorry that's what I meant by international. The headquarters and most employees are local, but all sales are US based.

I've been working 10-12hours per day, with a 1 to 1.5hour commute, in a high stress environment and got a 5% increase. Not thrilled.

BS it's all negotiation
its always BS aka CP but why not negotiate with the crooks u working first before looking outside? known crooks are better than the unknowns right? If you do that and pass on such a culture its dangerous for some new to work under someone who has such a bad habit of exploiting as long as they can rather than paying fare market prices.

Now at this point in time if your take home after all deductions is more than your age its a good salary,
if take home after all deductions is double your age you doing amazing

Well, seeing that I have not had an increase for 5 years in a row, I am not even CLOSE to that unfortunately.

please start looking for alternatives at the earliest. Company is making money but not you then its not a place u should be in. If you are into IT, PM me and I can see if I can find something that pays well
