Has MTN been updating their towers in P.E. ?
I was just surfing via my phone when for the first time it suddenly started saying "Yello Broadband" :D
It's never done that before, and I've never had much hope of getting 3G over here
This is cool though... all I need now is a 3G data card (which I was planning on getting in the near future anyway) ;)

This is bad news for Vodacom though, cos now they'll have to bring in pre-paid data bundles and enable 3G in my area before I'll go back to using them for internet..

just for your info: yello broadband means: EDGE not 3g
It does ? :o
Well that sucks :(
Darn darn darn darn...

I really thought it meant 3G.. dunno where I got that from..

Oh well, I was planning on waiting for a hsdpa card... they support edge which is still better than plain gprs... ;)

What does MTN's tower id say for 3G by the way?

Hi redarrow,

I've been using MTN's 3G service in PE (Walmer) since last year. I think a tower near me was one of the first to be enabled. I would imagine that their 3G coverage in PE is quite large right now. I remember getting a 3G signal out in Beverley Grove last year as well.

Be sure to live close to a 3G enabled tower for the full benefits. Otherwise your device may drop into GPRS/EDGE mode as the signal strength wanes.

Regards

Hmm, they'll need to go further than that to reach me :p

Well, I'm not about to move for the sake of 3G :D

I'll just be patient and wait.. at least I know now I can get EDGE, so it won't be a complete loss to get a HSDPA card...

Thanks for the info guys.. :)

Nothing wrong with EDGE!

Get a card that supports 3G and EDGE... Edge is not much slower than 3G and is faster on upload... It is also available in many different centers around the country. Easier to use on the road.

The only cards available are AFAIK:

1:GPRS, EDGE

2:GPRS, 3G

3: GPRS, EDGE, 3G, HSDPA
so if u want a card that supports edge and 3g, you have to get the hsdpa card..

Just a small correction here. Not all 3G sites say "yellow 3G" in-fact...I'm sitting in one of the main 3G sites at the moment and it doesn't say "Yellow 3G" The only indication that I have on my handset that I'm in a 3G covered area is that on my Nokia 6680 it shows "3G" in the top-left corner.

Also, if you do see "yellow broadband" it definately means you're in a EDGE covered site but it could also be 3G. EDGE is actually very good and is at least 3 times the speed of normal GPRS if you've got a good signal.

Indicators

Yello Broadband indicates EDGE. Some handsets like the Samsungs also display the E sign when in EDGE and the G sign in normal GPRS.

Certain handsets display the Yello 3G. Most handsets have the 3G symbol appear whenever in a 3G area.

Slinky511nx7 if you enable your broadcast messages on the Samsung you should get it. Thing is with the Samsung handsets it saves all these messages and you have to keep deleting them so its better to keep them off

Cell Broadcast works differently on all handsets.

Edgy Newcastle?

I have just noticed the Edge indicator on my Mot v360 in our area. The signal is from a tower called Signal Hill -3, but it never switches over to display MTN Broadband as I've been told it should.
Telkom speed test reports a steady 13k/bytes per second, which is a huge increase from an average of 6 kb per second.

My 6630 also doesn't indicate any change in coverage type, but that may be because it is on a different tower. Can I force it to use another?
