Yet another new PC thread - warning: contains NOOB questions

So am finally ready to build my new PC. It has however been a LONG time since I built a PC (2005 to be precise)

I am looking at one of three new boards - both socket 1156 to go with Core i5 750 2.66GHz

• Asus P7P55D or Asus P7P55D Deluxe
• Gigabyte's GA-P55-UD6

What I am confused about is this:

Is there still such a thing as an Nvidia only or ATi only board? I've seen some articles that say that Gigabyte and Asus P55 boards support both.( Manufacturer websites are just confusing:wtf

The reason this is a problem is because I want to keep using my 8800GT 512MB and wait for the new Nvidia cards due out later this year. Either want to buy a new card of take advantage of prices being forced down by the new cards

Any of those boards will be fine. As for GPU compatibility, they will also take any card. Its only SLI that the boards may not support, but I'm fairly certain they will (too lazy/tired to check now). Waiting for the new nVidia cards may take a while. Their new GPU's (GTX 480 + 470) are proving difficult to manufacture so will only be available in limited quantities, so it may still take a good while after they are launched (launch is around April) for prices to drop on the ATI 5xxx cards. Just letting you know you may be in for a longish wait. Until then, like I said earlier, the mobo's will have no problem with your 8800 And if you're waiting on the GPU, why not wait a bit to get the CPU/mobo? Both AMD and Intel are launching new stuff soon. Cant remember the Intel dates, but AMD is launching new CPU's and mobo hardware beginning March (during Cebit).

Intel isn't launching anything too soon. I would say just get the Asus P7P55D.
