I've recently added a PS3 to my console collection. I've got a few questions regarding Blu Ray on the PS3 and about some of the display settings.

I got Spiderman 3 and Planet Earth on blu ray. Some places in the movie or documentary the screen shots look great, picture perfect, but then some screen shots look grainy. Is this normal?

Also does the PS3 Cross Color Reduction and Super White setting make a difference, or should I leave it off?

I've got a Sanyo 40LCD (1080i) and a yamaha surround sound which has 1080i input. So the HMDI cable runs from my PS3 into the amp and then into my LCD. BTW the sound is incredible, clear sound.

.

Yes, It's film grain.

Exactly. The higher resolution exposes the imperfections all the more.

Thats is why I don't get the whole hype about high definition films. Merely re-encoding movies shot on film and adding lossless surround sound doesn't auger well. Its another means of ripping off the consumer.

I'll stick to DVD for as long as I can. When the whole process is HD, then by all means ...

You're commenting based on someone else's report of grain? OK then. Even with the film grain the image is far superior to DVD, but if it makes you feel better, you carry on with DVD.

@benitok: Planet Earth has a few grainy scenes that are mainly due to extreme-close ups with zoom-ins, which will result in the grainy scenes - also the dusk/night scenes may have some grain.

Thanks, sgtFiddler & arf9999. I just wanted to check if this was normal or maybe I configured something wrong. It still looks better than normal DVD, great documentary :D .

I guess something like Ice Age 2 will be grain free. I'm sure in time more movies will be recorded digitally, unless the director wants a grainy effect in the movie.

yep, the animations are superb, try Open Season for your collection.

Transformers out sometime in Sep, which should be great.
