Morning everyone,

I'm in the same boat as many of the previous forumites. I've been looking at getting a new TV but I'm a little stuck with what to get (I've been doing research for well over a week and I'm still no closer). My 40" Sony Bravia 40ex400 has served me faithfully for 5 years, but my eyes aren't getting any younger, and I'd like something a little bigger.

Ideally, I'd like 48 inches or higher, and I have a max budget of 12k. It will be mostly used for gaming on PS4/Xbox (so low input lag would be great) and for streaming mostly 1080p content. It wouldn't hurt if it was a smart TV and Plex was available natively on it. I won't be watching any sports on the TV and I will be watching little to no SD content, and I'm also not interested in 3D at all.

Now, the question is, is it worth getting Full HD TV's over the UHD TVs in the same price bracket? Is it worth getting a UHD TV and future proofing to a degree ... I was also reading (click for link) that Samsung claims all their 2015 UHD TVs will be getting an HDMI 2.0a upgrade via firmware that will enable HDR on them? I'd like the TV to last me a good couple of years like my Sony has.

I've also been reading about the whole Samsung vs LG UHD debacle about using RGB vs RGBW panels and whether RGBW panels count as real 4K/UHD or not, which has made me even more confused.

Some examples of UHD TVs I've been looking at:

1. LG 49UF680t (http://www.lg.com/za/tvs/lg-49UF680T) - I can get this for R9900
Apparently the 6 series 2015 UHD TVs from LG are using the RGBW layout, which Samsung claims are not real 4K TVs.

2. Samsung UA48JU6000K (http://www.samsung.com/za/consumer/t...UA48JU6000KXXA) - I can get this for R8999
This TV uses the standard RGB matrix and supposedly qualifies for the HDMI firmware upgrade.

Some examples of FHD TVs:

1. LG 55LF650T - http://www.lg.com/za/tvs/lg-55LF650T
It irks me to pay extra for the 3D though.

2. Samsung UA55H6400 - http://www.samsung.com/sa_en/consumer/tv-av/tv/full-hd/UA55H6400ARXUM
This one has 3D as well but it seems to be a good panel.

3.LG 55LF630V - http://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-55LF630V
Finally, no 3D but supposedly VA panels are better than IPS in terms of black levels and colour reproduction? Also, Web OS 2.0 doesn't seem to support Plex.

I'm also finding it very hard to find reviews for TVs, and in particular, information regarding latency and input lag.

Any advice or recommendations?

my personal opinion is that full HD is a future proof as you will need. ULTRA HD content will just be too big to worry about in the south african internet scene.

Hope you find the display that suits your needs though :)

With X265 not really. Can get a 4k movie at +-6gig and Netflix 4k series at 12-20gig.

Also with the fiber everywhere, quite a few people will be able to stream UHD by the end of this year ... I think

Where can you get this one at R8 999... best I have seen so far is R10 000. I am looking to upgrade from a sony to this one as well.

It was on special at my local President Hyper for R8999 until today. If you can make it to Vanderbijlpark before 8pm tonight, you might be able to still get a set.

The only problem I have with the JU6000 series is that the panel is still only 8-bit, and for HDR to be effective you need a 10-bit panel. Apparently the 2015 S-UHD TVs from Samsung have 10-bit panels and have been updated with HDMI 2.0a so I was having a look at the Samsung 50JS7200 which is on Takealot for under R15000, but apparently it has quite a bit of juddering with 24p content, which let's face it, will still be the majority of content for a while.

I'm glad i stumbled upon this thread, i am in the same boat as you and this particular Samsung is on special @ Takealot for just under R10k :

Samsung 48" Ultra HD LED PurColour TV
Model: UA48JU6000KXXA
http://www.takealot.com/samsung-48-ultra-hd-led-purcolour-tv/PLID40649839

Will mostly be used for PS4 gaming & streaming of movies / series.

Did anyone manage to find some input lag numbers on this model ? damn hard to find anywhere.

Mostly been using this site as reference:http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/
Any owners of this TV that uses it for the same purpose that can perhaps share their findings ?... would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Peace
