Yet another what car should I look at thread ... your input needed

Yup, I've been doing that. Lowering my standards and increasing the mileage allowance slightly.

I feel if you're looking at 2010 to 2012 cars such as the i20 or Sonic, that's what I'd go for... If it was my money, I'd say 1) Rio 2) i20 3)New shape Polo.

I've driven one or two old shape Polos before and wasn't too impressed. But did have two rental cars (Figo and Vivo) on two separate occasions and I feel that the Vivo was just much better.

FWIW, I recently bought a 2008 Honda Civic VXi hatch with 40000km on the clock for around that price. Fantastic cars. I owned the sedan for years before as well. Never had an issue other than incredibly minor stuff here and there, like the battery which does give hassles - requires a new battery - R1k and no more troubles...

Opinions on a 2007 Polo tdi? 65000kms on the clock with dealer proven FSH?

The low mileage is a concern. If it were me, no. Diesel is expensive, despite the "fuel economy" and any repairs are going to be much more expensive than an equivalent petrol Polo. I wouldn't.

He settled for a 2012 i20 1.4 with 20000kms on the clock.

Glad that is over. Worse than house hunting!

Greetings forum family!

I am on the verge of giving in to my sons desires for an upgrade. He currently drives a '73 mini cooper but it hasn't been a hassle free drive and besides the money I have put into the car, it is also the hassle and stress of keeping the car ticking over (always something to sort out here and there). So as he completes his degree I want to provide him with something reliable as he makes his way into the job market.

Input from you older as well as you youngsters would be greatly appreciated.

Onto some data:

22 yo male, pretty level headed, very finicky about his stuff (he really looks after what he has), sporty, social, bla bla bla.

The plan is to purchase the car for him and when he enters the job market he can pay me back according to what he earns (I'll decide on the %). Nothing for mahala!

Things to consider:
He will be travelling mostly around PTA and Joeys with the occasional long distance drive on holiday / long weekends.
Fuel consumption will be a factor
New or used (low mileage a must)
Reasonable parts / service costs (whatever reasonable is now days as I don't drive much anymore)
Some boot space to pile his big @rsed sports bag into.
ABS / Airbags / Central Locking etc.
Now price: R130k tops

I have only looked at the Ford Figo so far but am open to other brands as well.

Thoughts / suggestions / questions?

Haven't read through all the other suggestions but at the price point you mentioned, with the attributes of fuel economy, cargo capacity:

Honda Jazz (can get a decent low mileage Comfort model)
Hyundai i20
Kia Rio

EDIT: On reading a couple posts above mine, I see you got an i20. Well done - great car

I suggested this to him but he reckons it's a girly car. Anyway, he is happy, I am poorer. C'est la vie.

Wise choice.

I also hate shopping for cars - far too much choice and too many potential regrets.

i10, lately the i20s and Polos have started to feel rather flimsy for me.

Only if you want to die of boredom.

Are you just against VW or is it the whole package (Audi,SEAT, Lambo, Bugatti)?

OP i was thinking a SEAT Cupra.
