Yet another which car to buy thread

Be careful with the i20 and smaller hatches - most child seats are bulky and may leave no room for the kids legs.
Do yourself a favour and borrow a child seat and see how it fits in the vehicles you're interested in.
Rather look at the sedan options if possible.

I'm not sure how big the new Civic sedan is but I have the Cerato 2.0 sedan and it has plenty of space for child seats and lots of boot space for prams and baggage.
Fuel consumption is not bad either. I get 7.5L/100km on back roads and 6.5L/100km on highways with normal driving. I managed 5.9L/100km from JHB to Margate with wife, kid, pram, holiday luggage, food, etc. so I think 880km on 52 litres isn't bad for a 2.0 N/A engine.

The new Jettas are pretty great cars, all in all. At least have her drive one.

The Accord is a bit heavier on fuel but I would have probably bought one were it not for the price tag (new).
There are quite a few 2008-2010 models on Autotrader for under R150000.
 
Didnt have much time this weekend, so only tested the Cerato - 2.0 Auto hatch and 1.6 manual sedan. That hatch was fun to drive :D But semi decent fuel efficiency was difficult, lowest I saw the reading go was 8L/100. And the average on the car was 11.5L/100, which gels with my short experience with it. 1.6 was also good (and owner fitted leather seats from Kia), huge improvement over what we've got and seems like 8L/100 will be achieved without too much effort. Only thing thats missing is cruise control :/

Paul, is that with an auto or manual box?
 
Can't cruise control be fitted aftermarket? I think it can. Not sure I'd do it though.

I sure hope so, got my eye on a 2.0L hatch, and as long as its around the 8L/100 mark I'm happy. 11.5 though, no ways

Its a nice to have thats all. I'm the one that gets stuck with the long distance driving and CC makes it much more enjoyable

A large hatch/sedan with a boot in excess of 450L (this is the only failing of the Cerato) will be fine for 2 kids right? Even for weekends away where it'll be (worst case) one pram, luggage, dog stuff etc. I am convinced it'll work, my wife is not :p She wants to get a Touran or Sportage now because of the apparent space issue. Obviously more is always better, but is it needed?

I find my boot massive, I put bicycles and all sorts in there. I was actually sitting behind a 2.0l Hatch yesterday and got me thinking about upgrading to it, should be only be a small pay in amount on a trade in. I want the 2l engine and fancy features :D

I originally wanted the 2l when I bought but as I was under 25 the insurance was like double the price of the 1.6.
 
If you only need the space for holiday and trips now and then maybe get a trailer?
R10 000 vs another R100 000+ for space you use irregularly plus a higher fuel consumption figure doesn't make much sense.
