I'm trying to help a family member extending her network in a rather large house (double storey).
I did my own extender at home a while back, using ddwrt.

1. Any router recommendations? Obviously the further the range the better... I'm trying not to break the bank here, would rather buy a mass-market model.
2. Last I checked DDWRT wasn't updated very often and OpenWRT has supplanted it. I'm assuming it's currently the best option?

Its all going to depend on what the network is going to be used for. I'd suggest tp link routers, because they quite cheep. However, they tend not to have a good throughput. Should be fine for normal web traffic, but streaming is going to be difficult. Netgear will probably be one of your best options, excellent speed + range in my experience. If pricing is a deciding factor and if its at all possible, rather try switching your extender into a access point.

It's also been my understanding that OpenWRT has been the successor. You might want to have a look at Gargoyle .
Also check your supported types for DDWRT TP-Link & Netgear, as well as OpenWRT TP-Link & Netgear

Thanks for this. I'll check out tplink and sw compatibility. Should mostly be for surfing & mail, with a bit of remote desktop. Media streaming not important. Didn't know about gargoyle - will check it out, thanks.
