I hear a lot of developers and online business owners saying they love the Yoco payment gateway for accepting payments on their websites. What are the reasons?

Did not know they have a payment gateway ... they are R2 + 0.05% cheaper than payfast, so that ain't bad. But payfast was super easy to implement. No idea how much of a pain it would be to implement yoco.

From a retail perspective, they are 'cheap'. Especially if you are just starting off. I picked up a card machine for R99 odd, last year. So no barrier of entry. If you do volumes, a machine from your bank tends to be cheaper, % wise.

I think the difference in fees is so huge because R2 + 0,05% is huge when you think in terms of volume. That is a great one. Thanks for sharing that, It makes business sense.

Well yes, and no... once you start doing volume, there might be better alternatives out there. Also, I trust payfast and can get you up and running within the hour, once you have been approved etc. I cannot say the same for yoco (as in I have never been through the process myself). With payfast I can also offer users more payment options than just 'card', etc., while this is probably not the same with yoco.

In what industry are you?

I want to start an eCommerce business. I heard that it can take you less than 10 minutes to sign up and to start receiving payments on your website with Yoco. So that might be faster than Payfast too.

Are you going to use WordPress/woocommerce?

I use them for card. This is from my storefront for online sales:

I have been using their card machines for a few years - no complaints.

What cards are accepted currently?

All VISA and MasterCard cards that are 3D Secure enabled are accepted, including international cards. AMEX and Diners are not currently supported.

Note that all payments need to be processed in South African Rands.

I've used the Yoco payment gateway on a number of eComm websites. This is what I've found:

Pros:
  • Easy to integrate in a WordPress website (easier than Payfast).
  • Nice interface and UI for the admin and customer.
  • Send easy payment requests via email, link or sms (that look really professional and clean).
Cons:
  • Limited functionality (like monthly, weekly or yearly subscription payments).
  • No official Shopify integration
  • Does not sync your store inventory into the awesome Yoco web business portal . (I know, that's so dumb).
I would go with Yoco if it's going to be a small online store.

If it's a medium to large store with many categories and products or if you want more flexibility and customization then Payfast is the way to go.
