Yosemite vs Mavericks - performance

After coming from Mavericks, having done a migration from a previous Mavericks, I can say that Yosemite is snappier.

Will be doing a fresh install some time.

rMBP/i5/8GB/Iris/512GB.
 
On my mid-2011 iMac I have also found Yosemite to be snappier. I hardly ever shutdown my computer, but obviously had to restart it 2-3 times since updating (unrelated to the OS directly - other software upgrades that required a restart). The startup time on Yosemite is much better than on Mavericks (for me, at least), and I haven't had any negative experiences so far. Apps seem to open much faster too.

My husband has a rMBP, but he hasn't used it enough since updating to comment on battery life, etc. - though he has experienced the WiFi issue some have complained about; nothing too serious for him, based on his current infrequent use.
 
Snappier? I think it's the placebo effect.

Yosemite runs the same on my Mac as Mavericks did. I love the refreshed look Yosemite brings though. No compatibility issues with the software I run at all.

The reason I say it's snappier is because I'm comparing it to a Migration Assisted Mavericks install, which was slower than the clean Mavericks install from which it came.

rMBP/i5/8GB/HD 4000/128GB / Mavericks -> rMBP/i5/8GB/HD 4000/128GB / Migration Assistant Mavericks (slower) -> rMBP/i5/8GB/Iris/512GB / non clean install Yosemite upgrade (faster).

Hence why I want to do a clean install. I suspect performance for that will be on par with Mavericks.
 
Yosemite is running just as fast, except for my boot time which is a little slower. Restarting is rare enough that I'm not particularly concerned. Maybe it has something to do with trim being disabled now…

I'd do a clean install but I really cannot be arsed to reinstall all that software.
 
Upgrade through the app store, speed wise i find that Maverics booted quicker. Yosemite runs alittle faster but not that noticeable.

One thing that I have noticed is that there is random times when apps freeze. I type a mail and click on send, the new mail window does not close and stays open. Thinking I might have not clicked send properly i click send again the window still stays open and the mail got send twice. Closing the mail client through the activity monitor closed it.

Safari also froze on me a couple of times.
 
Four finger swipe between workspaces gets stuck for me sometimes, not frozen but it just stops part-way through the animation. Swiping again fixes it but I never noticed that on Mavericks.
 
I haven't see any noticeable performance differences between the two, to be honest. Yosemite is prettier though :)

not sure if i'll move any machines to yosemite yet.

i prefer a clean install, but as bwana says - the reinstall of other software is where the ball-ache come in
 
I haven't had any issues since my install and I've been running Yosemite since the public beta came out. Some glitches here and there, but those have been ironed out with all the updates.

Performance why I can't complain. Just as fast as Mavericks - if not faster. Battery life the same. I have seen an increase in battery life while using Safari.
 
Am I the only one who thought Yosemite is a new strip joint? lol
 
My wife has a late 2010 MacBook Air which sadly only has 2GB of RAM. She seems to think that it's more responsive with Yosemite, not that it was problematic with Mavericks, but Mavericks wasn't as "fluid" as compared to when she had Mountain Lion.

I used a similar mba for the open beta. It ran well so I didn't have any qualms when it came to installing the final release on my mbp.

They broke swiping in the browser and scrolling stuttered in every application in Mavericks. They finally fixed it a few months ago.

I haven't noticed any difference yet (this coming from a non-tech guy). I had to upgrade to Yosemite because my iTunes store wasn't working with Mavericks. The only difference I've noticed so far is that interface looks a little different. For instance the iTunes logo is now red instead of blue.
