You can now Block Telkom -R

Use with caution though. You will not be able to run the ussd code when you are out of Telkom coverage so it could leave you without network.

They should add more options there like Telkom -R 2G only and maybe enable vowofi or a on and off slider in the app but no doubt a step in the right direction especially for fixed lte users.
 
I notice I switch to Telkom -R at times.

If you have a fixed lte service that the router keeps switching to Telkom -R.

If you make use of cheaper Telkom only bundles and know you have poor coverage and your router or phone keeps on switching to Telkom -R.

If you use Telkom in your phone and you use FreeMe then it is not needed at all as Freeme data allows for roaming.
 
Also if you use a router or phone that only supports band 3 LTE you will lilely see Telkom -R more that users on a high end device like a Samsung S8, S10 or iPhone or even Chinese brands because these devices have band 40 and likely supports LYE-A on Band 40 so these devices favour band 40 because it has more spectrum bandwidth than band 3.

On a Band 3 only device signal is key and Telkom -R is likely always better.
 
How can you switch LTE bands on Android

You can switch them Through engineering mode on your phone dialer

What you will have to identify is what phone maker and varient your device is(mediatek or Snapdragon) and google the ussd code

Like for mediatek devices I know it's *#*#0206*8378#*#*

For Snapdragon it's trickier as it depends on manufacturer and varient.

Does Telkom charge you additionally if your fixed LTE service switches to -R or does the internet stop working?

I haven't noticed this happening.

You don't pay extra you just get redirected to the OOB page.

Does Vodacom use Band 20 for LTE like Mtn.

I have a simcard for each network and always looking at the USSD codes and see what is new. What new bundles ect is available so I just managed to spot it. It wasn't there the day before.

As far as I know MTN and Vodacom does not run Band 20. They run Band 1 (refarmed 3G spectrum), Band 3 (Main LTE spectrum allocation) and Band 8 (refarmed 2G spectrum). Vodacom and Rain roaming agreement sees Vodacom also have an extra Band 3 and Band 38/41 access where ever Rain has coverage.

Telkom has Band 1 (refarmed 3G spectrum), Band 3 (refarmed 2G spectrum) and Band 40 ( 2 x 20MHz blocks of main LTE spectrum allocation)
