Hi my name is Joe Blog and I’m an Internet addict.
Even just typing this phrase is ridiculous but it may become a common place occurrence if psychologists, wanting to declare Internet addiction as a disorder, have any say.
This is the latest potential disorder to come under discussion but to my mind it’s taking things a step too far.
Thankfully there are some people out there who recognize this for what it is … a money-making scam.
Seems the chap, a Dr Jerald J Block M.D. (nogal), who is pushing for this ‘addiction’ to be patented stands to make a packet if his disorder is included in the updated psychology diagnostic manual, called the DSM V.
But according to just one voice of reason the research that provides evidence for this ‘disorder’ is sketchy. It consists of people complaining about an issue that they already identified as an issue.
“It’s funny, but if you ask 100 Boston Red Sox whether they like the Red Sox or not, I bet you I could predict what their response will be. That’s the quality of much of the research into ‘Internet addiction disorder’,” said John Grohol on Psych Central.
My only question now is can I get time off work if I have an Internet addiction? If so I say bring it on and while you’re up pass me my mouse before I lose touch with reality completely.
