Just an idea. The police are looking for reservests, a mate of mine went for all the training and so forth. He says its lots of fun, and you get to meet lots of interesting adrenaline junkies, and you get to play chuck norris vs the ganstars!

Anyway, I think that instead of moaning, we should start taking positive steps to reclaim our beloved beautiful country from the bandits that have us living in fear and fences.

Crime is not a race issue, and although it may be a class issue, us citizens should not stand for it. Waiting for the government to do anything is useless, because they don't even notice the mini civil war going on here.

So these are the steps we can take.

1.) GET A GUN!
This controversial step, although frowned upon by most of society is crucial. You can save peoples lives. This "gang-stars" are fearless and a concealed fire arm might get their attention. Also if somebody attacks you, just whip out your pistol and put one in the perp's shoulder and you live to fight the war another day.

2.) REPORT CRIME!
Its a community thing. You know of a baddy, phone the cops!

3.) USE YOUR SKILLS!
If you are a retired prosecutor, advocate or attorney and law is in your blood, why not help instead of listening to radio 2000 the whole day. You can help, all you have to do is look.

Justice is what the majority of good people in the community think is fair. Justice is defeated when good people do nothing. Get out of your chair and join the war.

Peace and freedom have always been worth fighting for!

Now that statement tells me a lot.
Firstly you probably don't own a firearm. It's not just a case of getting a gun. There's more paperwork and waiting involved than when you apply for ADSL.
Secondly I have to agree with you that it will get the "gang-stars", as you call them, attention. But for the wrong reasons. It makes you a target. The feel a flying fsck about your widdle gun. If they know you carry, they'll do all they can to get it off of you. kill you with your own gun type of scenario. I've been to enough such cases in the townships.
Whip out your pistol annd put one in his shoulder? Son you whip out your d!ck, not a firearm. You're liable to shoot yourself in the foot if you tried that.

Put one in his shoulder? When things go pearshaped there's no such thing as putting one in his shoulder. Stop watching movies and/or living in a little perfect-shoulder-shot fantasy world. It's like a pc. Point n click. Everything happens so fast that you dont have time to aim. Point n Click.
Then maybe you should also read the newspapers. You shoot one of the fsckers and you're liable to get charged with murder or attempted murder. Guilty until proven innocent it seems is the norm when you are a licensed gun owner in SA.

Daysleeper may have a point here. Do something, don't just sit on ur arse complaining.

Gru - right on there. You never "whip" out a gun. That just plain stupid and dangerous. Get proper training!
You only aim at something ur willing to shoot/kill. You only shoot to kill, not wound. You only shoot as a last resort. You're responsibly for where your bullet ends up.

Getting a gun is a huge responsibility, but i'd recomend that everyone should have at least one weapon per household. It's still the best defence agains the criminals.

Gru - as for a gun making you more of a target...i don't thinks so. Not having a gun makes you a very very easy target. With a gun you at least have a chance of scaring them off. (ok, not a big change, but it's still better than notting)
