It's a simple question of what is your greatest weakness. Not, what is your greatest weakness and how do you solve/rationalise it.
Answer the question simply and straightforwardly, and let the chips fall where they will.

If you have to ask about this then you've evidently not considered any sort of introspective investigation. While it won't necessarily cost you a job, answering sincerely will go a long way in you getting the position. It really doesn't matter what the weakness is (unless of course it is something serious like drugs, or smacking your wife around), it is more about how you answer the question and what you've done to grow as a person...

It's a question that should not be asked during an interview, IMHO. I don't know a lot of people that would discuss their weaknesses openly, especially with a stranger.
Anyway, my standard answer to that question has always been that I don't like interruptions when I have deadlines ... and that I tend to get irritated when I'm in the middle of a complicated calculation and someone drops in to ask how my day is going or how my ass is feeling after an accident.

It should - assuming its a corporate position.
Though if you ask only questions of this nature you're going to end up with someone skilled in the art of corporate speak with zero actual skills. So these types of questions should constitute the minority of the questions. Its a question of balance and in some positions you do actually need people who can dodge a question if the need arises.
It's a long, complicated story and off topic.

I'd probably tend to answer it from a skills matrix side... like... I haven't had adequate exposure to certain aspects of the role. Then again... if I were to respond honestly I know perfectly well what my weaknesses are and it's a constant frustration because you're bumping against genetics.

I normally say that one of my weaknesses is that i am impatient. Its a bad thing for most of the time, but for an employer its something they like as it means things will get done ASAP.

Its a set piece & they expect a set piece answer in return. If you don't reply in that form it shows that you are utterly unprepared (20 sec of googling will show you that question) and can't recognize an obvious trap to save your life (/job).
I'd be surprised if a reputable company asks that Q though...its outdated & painfully overplayed.
