Cant wait for a real world model. The sooner we can stop using mechanical drives the better!
Solid state drives have been around for many years in the several GB capacity.
Problem is :
1. They are too small for the average user nowdays
2. They are normally very expensive
600GB of storage space would cost about R 111 000 at $25/GB.
They need to be about 25 times cheaper and 10 times bigger before they'll catch on.

That's what happened with Hard drives, CPU power, RAM, everything electronic.
32GB is a damn good start. Soon it'll double, then triple, then eventually there'll be no reason why we should use hard drives with moving parts at all...
Yes Solid state drives have been around, but not at this capacity. 32GB is usable for OS/programs etc..., 8GB isn't :/

Also next year you'll start seeing the emergance of hybrid drives e.g. say normal 320Gb with built in 8-16Gb flash drive.
MS Vista has a feature called ReadyBoost, which is a seperate cache of all the programs, DLLs & files repeatedly read & written during startup & shutdown. The logic is that the ReadyBoost cache (& possibly swapfile) lives on the Flash and the rest lives on the normal platters.
Should speed up startup & shutdown quite dramatically.

The lenghts hardware manufacturers have to go through to compensate for a badly written OS.

I'm reasonably happy with my Vista RC1's 33 sec boot (Post->Login=17 + Login->fully loaded desktop=16). Wouldn't mind 10-15sec tho.

...but doesn't flash have a limited lifespan? What will happens should the flash start to fail?

And the OS is badly written because you in your vast knowledge can surmise that out of the thousands of engineers and developers at MS, who have been working on Vista for years on end, with more experience than your years on earth, are not as capable as you...
