The hard drive has become somewhat of a neglected child in the computer performance environment. Many people buy all kinds of new equipment that beautifies the outside of their computers, gives them ever larger and prettier screens to look at and install graphics processors that can calculate inter planetary slingshot manoeuvres in no time at all, but neglect to send their old hard drives to backup duty and replace them with faster ones.
My message to you in short is this… STOP IT!
The speed advantages of new drives fresh off of the production floor are really something to behold compared to the drives in the same price class a few years back. I am not even talking size here, I am talking speed. The drives can deliver more data off the platter in a shorter time and also find scattered data on the platter faster than ever. Speed advantages are slowly trickling down the price chain. If you really want to see something interesting despite a spate of negative press by some over clocking sites, invest in RAID 0 just for the hell of it. Yes, it doesn’t offer you redundancy but it gets you where you want to be a lot faster on the data train.
If you haven’t tried it yet, do it as soon as you can! Get your motherboard manual, read up on its RAID 0 configuration possibilities and do it! There is tons of information online to help you get started so I am not going to invest much more text into the topic here. For safety’s sake you can start using your USB flash drive for it’s true purpose and backup important information onto it from then on. RAID 0 for gaming systems and general fast computing where you are not too worried about lost information should something go wrong, will really have you gasping of pleasure. The difference can be seriously remarkable. Even just putting three old drives together will make a massive difference if your system can handle RAID configurations.
Don’t spend your money on the cheapest drives you can find. Spend a little more, go into the effort of reading up on transfer rates and latency. Compare drives. Ask around! It has become too easy for vendors to simply slam any old drive into custom built computers, even office computers without customers asking questions. Sometimes a snappy hard drive can make all the difference.
Don’t let anybody talk a hole into your head with regards to this. Faster drives are a bonus anytime of the day! If you can afford to use RAID 0, do it!
