Your matric certificate has no value: report

I always say it depends on the type of person. We have young people employed that only have a matric but are invaluable to the company due to their work ethic and others that have been employed with degrees and don't even make it past the probation period.

"The fact that the pass mark is so low engenders a lack of confidence in the standard of all the matriculants’ qualifications, including those who do achieve good marks,” it said.

That doesn't make sense, Solidarity.

It said that for a subject like Tourism, 97.5% of students achieved 30% or higher in 2014, and 83.2% achieved above 40%. Similarly, for Life Orientation, figures of 99.6% and 97.8% were achieved.

Agree with that a bit - those shouldn't be subjects.

Mine does, it's just the suckers from the last 10-15 years.
The ANC gave you a nanny service.

It is easy, you give the job applicants a written test.

And instructions on email when you invite them for the interview.
First two instructions
1. Don't be late
2. Turn off your cellphone.

80% of school leavers fail before they get to the actual test.

The ANC has a fantastic story to tell!

It has value - in the same way that a drivers license doesn't make you a good driver, but provides a bottom threshold of sorts as to how terrible you can be.

Plus it gets your foot in the door for uni.

Do you think there should be a proper entrance examination for universities, something like the NBT but broader, encompassing more subjects and one has to write certain subjects depending on what course one wishes to take?
For example don't you find it a bit cheap that IEB, which is more difficult than NSC, counts the same as the NSC qualification? Also, how do you know if they didn't cheat on their matric, the standardized test would allow one to check that they actually know their stuff. It would of course have to be administered by each university, so it could be that the test standard is different for each uni, but at least it would be the same for each applicant to that university.

I first heard talk of entrance exams in 2004 so I'm surprised that it isn't the norm yet.

I was annoyed about this at the time, but ultimately it doesn't matter. Even with that disadvantage I still walked away with uni entrance to the desired course and a great education. Knowing what I know now I'd write IEB again, even with that disadvantage.

It kinda depends on the course I guess. The one I picked was pretty chilled about who got in...but everything from that point onwards was a complete bloodbath. Thats one way to do it I guess.

I imagine it isn't the norm as most people wouldn't get in and then they would riot more than they already do. Surely matric is your entrance exam? Too bad the slipping standard of education doesn't lend to its credibility.

I agree with the IEB stuff. It may be tougher but isn't it great to know that even if you scored the same as someone else your relative level is far superior because IEB is more difficult. You'll most likely also have the edge in university then too.

I remember when I was in Grade 11 writing exams they, for some reason, put grade 10s next to us. The grade 10s brought coloured pencils to the exam as their exam consisted of colouring in correctly. Can you imagine! I thank God everyday that I wasn't born one year later as I would have been subjected to that sort of nonsense education.

Unless someone has gone through IEB, a solid university degree, can easily display their skill or is older than me I don't have much faith in the level of their education, even with matric. You can pass with travel & tourism and life orientation as pass subject with 33.3% ffs.
