Your opinion on the "Windows rot"

And you'll always find that the workstations are most of the times way underpowered for the job it's supposed to do, e.g. Celeron with 512MB RAM & onboard graphics that must run Office 2007.

If you have Windows 7 Pro running on a Quad Core workstation with at least 2GB RAM, you'll have a fantastic work pc.

And the desktops will be locked down, updates & new software is pushed from a central server (after being tested). You will be amazed how faults drop as most are caused by the users.
 
I've been running Windows 7 at home now for over a year. I've noticed a slight performance drop, but it is minor. XP on the other hand really started to creak after a few months, no matter what I did to "preserve" it. Honestly, Windows 7 has set a new standard in my view.

My view as well.

Run Windows XP and Windows 7 on the same hardware and you'll literally see the difference.

Lucky number 7 for Microsoft.
 
I think there are two components that contribute to "Windows rot"

1. Programs that don't clean up after themselves. They end up cluttering the registry with dead entries or your hard drive with old temp files. This eventually clogs up your system.

2. Hardware and software vendors cluttering your systems with badly written, useless services and applications that run automatically. Printer manufacturers are the worst. They no longer ship with a 1mb driver, these days you have to install 500mb of buggy applications that need to run in memory and slow down your system.

After a while these two things cause your PC to grind to a halt.

While Windows makes it easy for manufacturers and developers to do this I don't think we should blame Microsoft.

yeah if im still in support by the time we go live with 7 i will be a happy chap. We have to format machines every-fkcing-day just because of the windows rot.
and the worst thing is the users dont understand it.they just expect the machine to run fine for years on end?! Ive had Windows 7 installed on my laptop for 6 months now and the performance is pretty much the same since day 1.

Xp always rots ...no matter how much software you install
 
I have actually recently installed Windows XP SP3 as I need it for a soundcard. Dual booting with Windows 7, I'm shocked at how much slower XP is on a fresh install! It frequently freezes and has unexpected waits. I thought it would be way fast (I'm on a Q6600 with 4gb RAM), but Windows 7 is faster.

Indeed, plus when I install all of my development software, xp bootup becomes so slow it feels like it needs a fresh re-install already. And a few months down the line, guess what happens...

I have been running my current win7 installation from the beginning of january this year. Boot is still fast, no crashes, and not even the hint of requiring a re-install!

Well, theres nothing we can do about the "rotting" besides managing it. People usually install crap and forget/or dont know that you have the option of not letting it boot up with the OS, which is the cause of a slow boot.

Every OS will get slower and slower and slower...hmmm, got me thinking now...how can/do we write code, or an OS that wont slow down over time, interesting topic...

Anyway...the best thing we can do is manage it, if you guys wana remove missing dll links and clear up the registry then i would suggest CCleaner, but other than that, sorry boet, your pc will continue to get slower, its inevitable.
 
i've been on the same win7 install for a long, long time now - still pretty decent

I have to however say, it does still rot - but VERY little.
