Hi All,

I bought Age of Empires III and wanted to play multi-player online. I have a 192Kbps line. But other players wouldn't play with me cause they said and I quote, "Your ping sucks!"

What are they talking about?

Means you haev bad latency.. responce time from a server.. you'll get used to the term.

A solution is to play local, the pings will always be fine local, but international will have more players whereas local isnt always an option.
Higher speed doesnt change the ping times btw, nothing to do with you having a 192kb line.
Are you with IS or SAIX (a telkom account or a openweb/uncapped one?)

It might be that the line is having a problem with bad ping times, or as they say that your ping sucks and that the end of it.

you are most probably playing on international servers, you are probably using a shaped account and that means that you wont have such a great ping (if you dont know what ping or latency means i rate u should take a look at google and learn about it becuase all multiplayer games rely on a specific ping or better)

try look for people in SA that want to play and play using a direct connection, not through an american/uk server

good luck!

Basically ping or latency is the total time for data to be sent from your PC to the server (Where the game is being hosted) and back to your PC. Its timed in ms. 1000ms = 1 second. So if u playing a game with 1000ms ping it will take the game 1 second to respond. First person shooters need a ping lower than 100ms so only national games can be played. For strategy like AOE3 u can play with higher pings. But why would people over seas want to play with someone thats got a horrible ping when they can get some one with a better ping?

Ways to reduce your latency would be to get your traffic unshaped either by a proxy server or by getting an unshapped account. Warning that unshaped accounts are much more expensive than the normal shaped accounts.

edit

Or u can get a game hosted in SA and play with people in SA.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Guess I will have to go read up on all this. It just frustrating that people overseas have all the best technology and I have to be reduced to finding ways around the system to play on even playing fields.

How on earth can we South Africans compete in this kind of environment? It seems so unfair! Makes me hate Telkom even more!

Yes, Telkom calls it broadband, however it should be narrowband. Broadband starts at 2MB!!!
