Careful with the drivers. My brother bought a nice little screen but the drivers are a problem to get it working.

Hi guys,

So I have had a Pi for over a year now but onnly used it as a media player. I want to now make it into a download server as well as media player. Can anyone recommend a distro that can support this?

I would prefer to use the Pi over my PC for downloading due to the power consumption, and to lower the wear and tear on my PC.

I am of a Linux noob (but not a PC/gadget noob) so i will be able to figure things out, but don't understand the in depth Linux stuff yet.

Thanks in advance.

What are you downloading? Torrents? NZBs? Http?

The easiest thing to do for someone learning linux is to install a standard GUI based download manager for your download type of choice and then VNC in to your Pi to set new downloads, et cetera.
Another option is to install a terminal based download manager which will be easier and faster to access but not great for someone who isn't used to the terminal.

In terms of distros, all the main distros should support whatever sort of download manager you like although obviously Raspbian has the best online support.

There may be applications specifically designed for remote download managing but I don't know of them, maybe someone else does?

I will be primarily using NZBs, and the occasional torrent. I want to go the SABnzbd/Sickbeard approach to automate the downloads and then VNC to add any manual downloads that I need. Will use my external 1TB drive for storage and transfer onto my server when the downloads complete.

I will download Raspbian tonight and see how it works. I have been using OpenELEC all this time so will be a change :) thanks!

In the same boat, installing Rasbian now and will follow this guide - http://www.howtogeek.com/142249/how-to-turn-a-raspberry-pi-into-an-always-on-usenet-machine/

I'm using Deluge for torrents and PyLoad for HTTP downloads. Works a treat!

Both have web interfaces and deluge has a pc/mac/linux client

You can also power it from a USB3 hub (it's worked best for me to use two ports via a Y-cable). Handily that also gives you a plethora of sufficiently high power USB ports for 2.5" drives and (unfortunately) high-power USB WLAN sticks. And, if you're going that way, a 3G stick. Also, you're sorted with ONE power cable in the mix.

Using a Samsung charger with Edimax wifi dongle attached as well. Haven't had any power issues.

Hi all. I've been involved with a project for a company using Rasberry Pi devices and it's coming to a point where we are almost ready to roll out. What we are looking for are Rasberry Pi cases that will completely enclose the components including the memory card. We're rolling it out to all the offices across the country and we're just concerned that the SD cards might get "misplaced". We're initially looking to roll out about 500 of these units. The casing should also not be too difficult to open so that if the SD card goes faulty, the user on site can replace it with a card purchased locally and they copy the software on themselves. This way there is minimal downtime. Any ideas on where i can purchase such cases locally or have it made would be welcome.
Thanks.

I would get it manufactured from steel and get it powdercoated and screenprinted.

Its not that expensive, look professional
