I started reading again in my free time, ( after I quite mmo wow I realized I have to much free time on my hands:P), I recently went through the Dan Brown series( sad that I am this behind). Anyways I would love to know what Authors to look out for, I am a major Tolkien fan, enjoyed and enjoyed the Brown Books, S. King, that kind of thing,

so if you are into the same type of themes and have any recommendations I would love to hear them. Also I would love to know what you guys consider a decent "reading rate" words per second etc, I feel for some reason that my reading skills are below par.

Not exactly in the ball park, but really interesting and entertaining, check out Will Self.

Deon Meyer writes some excellent suspense/thriller novels.
He is an Afrikaans writer but all his books have been translated into almost every European language.

Also, Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series.

You may find this question largely answered by (as of now, today) 17 pages worth of books, books, books chatter. There's also 5 pages worth of fantasy genre specific chatter too, if you want to focus in that area. Finally, some hot "Free Fantasy and Sci-fi E-Books" action!

That should keep you busy awhile...

Gregory David Roberts - Shantaram

Busy with this book still :( its really sucky to read, no offence to people who love it. ugh i dunno when my sister says the beginning will suck to get going she sure wasn't kidding.
The thing i hate thus far is the writing style.. i just hope it improves.(e.g. time flies/gaps, future info is given sometimes when he just meets someone new :erm: etc)

Uhm my favourite author's who are more like action/adventure movies are the likes of chrichton, king, koontz, sheldon(*for some kinky things sometimes haha, like a man soapie). All of which write highly entertaining books but you won't find it spoken of in the book clubs ;) as its not 'serious' literary novels... like i said, these are the entertainment ones.. much like clancy and brown.

I recommend dean koontz books.. you can't go wrong with it if you liked king and brown novels. bonus is that he has LOTS of novels so you won't be bored for a long time. :)

Daniel Easteman . . . love his books, they defintely are good.

The thing I like about his style is you get involed in the book basically from page one and cannot put the book down unlike some other writers where things drag on slowly.

For me your best fantasy authors:

Raymond E Feist - If you have not read Magician and the rest of the Riftware Saga than you are missing out on a piece of work that makes Tolkein look dead.

David Eddings - Dry wit, cunning stories and fantastic adventures. Most of his books are series based and really entertaining.

David Gemmel - Shorter stories more blunt and too the point. Wastes no time faffing with politics.

Michael Moorcock- Some good twisted fantasy. I really enjoy his books.

Robert Jordan - He writes the Wheel of Time series.. I think its around 12 books long, and perhaps a bit long winded, but up there with the greats.

Others:

Wilbur Smith - I love how he is able to capture the essence of Africa in his works. His writing is normally well researched and well though out.
Bill Bryson - He is able to capture reality and the sciences in a very entertaining read.
