The SPCA in Grassy Park is amazing. I have met a few of the inspectors and have to say that I'm really impressed with their involvement and response time. On a few occasions I have picked up stray dogs and also reported abused animals. They always respond and never fail to give feedback.

Is this unique to Grassy Park SPCA?

They may be very nice and all but as an organisation SPCA is High Kill. I won't support them. I'd rather support pro adoption places like Lucky Lucy Foundation. Check their facebook pages and watch the entire pack run. You won't see that at any other rescue society.

You could be right about high kill and that has also been my concern. I've been involved with animal care, rescued and fostered a few strays in the last few months. I do and will not hesitate to stop and load a stray dog and take it to the vet. However, my vet refused to treat one such a dog. I kept the dog at my home for a couple of days (it was over a weekend). The SPCA collected the dog and it has been adopted 2 weeks later after making a full recovery.

The dog I saw yesterday was almost certainly on it's last legs. He could barely stand and suffered from severe diarrhea. By the time the inspector and myself arrived at the property, the dog was lying in the back yard and could hardly manage to lift his head. I would rather see that dog in a pain-free place (death) than to see it suffering like that.

As a matter of interest, do other welfare organisations have the authority to remove a neglected or abused animal from its owners?

My experience has been bad, Bad bad Bad.

Many years ago a dog of mine went missing. He had a microchip. The spca was called a number of times over 2 weeks
(the dog was a king charles spaniel - not exactly a common breed).
The answer was always no, we have no king charles spaniel here. In fact we have never had one here.
An attorney friend (who gave me my dog as a puppy) was driving past the spca on day & decided to pop in. There was my dog. He had been there for over 2 weeks.

More recently I was in beach rd, sea point, and a border collie started following me. This was a saturday evening on a long weekend. The dog had been well looked after, but he had no collar or tag.
After numerous calls I discovered the SPCA seems to be closed after hours & on long weekends.
To my mind it is one of the 1st places people will call when their pet goes missing, or they find a lost animal.
Place is not much good to man or beast if it is closed after hours.

All the SPCA's have emergency kennels for after hours...

Bad experience. I met the most heartless dead human being working as a vet at the SPCA. A more vile person I have yet to meet. Otherwise I am sure they are cool.

I've had mostly good experiences but no dealings with SPCA. We adopted 2 from PETS and the first adoption, they really went out of this way for us, drove our new dog from Gordon's bay with a animal behavior person to sort out our boerboel who hasn't been with any other dog before. They were here for over 4 hours and wouldn't leave until they were sure it was safe for our new dog...that's really going beyond the call of duty IMO. Second pup they gave to us at no charge...also adopted a runt of a dog from Langabaan animal rescue..very nice people!

I guess it's the same in all organizations, you get the good and the bad. Sorry you have had such bad experiences Grantza, maybe grab one of the other smaler pets rescue numbers to have on hand. Can imagine quite a few pets get lost along beach rd! :)

Also had bad experience with them. Friend of mine dog went missing, a few years back, on a Saturday morning. I drove by the SPCA on the Tuesday and decided to stop and show my daughter the dogs. And there we found the dog, 3 days later. SPCA told us the dog was there for over a month and we must pay R30 per day. We asked for the paper work of the day when the dog was brought in and they couldn't find it. Then they remember, that the paper work is still with the guy that worked the weekend and who brought the dog in over the weekend. Long argument story/short, they caved after they realized that they are talking themselves into a corner. We payed only for the 3 days.
Our SPCA closed doors at the end of May 2013 due to money problems.

It was a miserable experience for me. On the sunday I made over 30 calls to various shelters across the greater cape town area, vets etc.
I landed up making contact with a lady in fresnaye who is able to look after a stray for a short term period.

I called over and over and over.
All one gets is a voicemail message giving their office hours !!

Ahhh ok, what I'm referencing is actual physical emergency kennels, as in you go to the SPCA and drop the dog off in on the the kennels and lock it and go away.

Bad. Around 5 years ago I went to the SPCA in Randburg to give a little stray a home. At the time I was living in a flat, which had a decent sized court yard. Defnitley big enough for a Daschund. The lady working there asked me what size the area was that the dog would be staying in. I explained it to her, and she told me that it would be animal abuse to keep the dog in such a small area, this despite telling her that the dog could go in and out of the house as he/she pleases, because i just lock the security gate. She also told me that it was unacceptable not to have anyone at the house during the day to watch the dog.:wtf:

I eventually gave up and walked out. I havent donated or supported the SPCA since. Having said that, I have donated to other organisations for animals in JHB and Durban.

There are definitley better organisations out there.

Terrible Experience with the spca in my area. Don't like them and don't trust them. They seem to go on one side dissicions to confiscate healthy animals without the proper procedures on heresay. Wouldn't surprise me if something was handed out to orgistrate the affairs....Makes one wonder when we ever gonna see the loyalty to the real cause....Dam sad.
