Look at Amazon.com or co.uk and try to buy some clothing and check the checkout estimate of 'import duty deposit'
Are you able to find all the items from Temu on Amazon? If you do, do the duties actually match?
Find an item of 'apparel' on Amazon.com which costs what the Temu item costs, which ships to SA and then you can based on the price of the estimate of duties at Amazon checkout get a good idea how much SARS will want from you.
Here is a $99 pair of shoes, from Amazon.com:
Those "import charges" are the VAT and relevant duties on clothing. So almost double the price. R1800 of shoes will incur a charge of R1619 from Amazon to pay over to SARS and DHL (for processing fees). If shipping by Temu, the processing fee may be a little smaller but makes up R200 or less of the total.
This is the maximum you'll pay. If Temu lies on the invoices, that's another thing, but be prepared to fork out R1600 to pay for R1800 worth of shoes.

Every different type of item has different duties attached.
Clothing for instance is 45% because it protects local business.
The R500 rule isn’t meant to work either. It’s meant to be for a gift from a real person, but it’s either too much for SARS to deal with or the Chinese “have a way” around it.
And for items that are not clothing?

You should try with different items because different categories of items have different duty. I think computer parts have no duty and only VAT but other things may or may not have less or more duties added.
I am not so sure this will work for types of items I order, but I'll check nonetheless next time I order.
With Temu, it doesn't appear to be linked to the value of the item, although clothing or ant textile related item is more. Even the same things just different colours have different duties. Roughly in the same ballpark but not the same.
It should be linked to the value. Maybe Temu is cheating. Amazon shows you the correct amount that SARS expects. You may be lucky and Temu may under declare or our SARS have a deal with China. But if you're prepared for the worst (Amazon estimate) then you can possibly get a pleasant surprise.

There are thousands of customs categories that something could fall into, I wouldn't be surprised if you did two duplicate orders for the same value and got two totally different customs amounts tacked on.
Just to give you an example (there are about 700 pages of duties for each and every item imaginable):
Correct. But if you want a quick and mostly reliable way of figuring out the estimated tax and duty imposed by SARS, Amazon is a good way. They've been doing this for years and they refund over estimates and absorb under estimates, so it's in their interest to get it right. So as a quick, rule of thumb way, Amazon can show you the approximate estimate of what you may be required to pay, if Temu/Shein declare properly and our SARS guys don't have some backdoor deal with China.
That hasn't been the case for a while now.
