Hi people

I currently have the nikon D5000 with 18-55mm, 55-200mm & 50mm. I have the sb600 flash as well. Now the question is, do i need any other lens and should i change what i have for anything better. Only 1 thing i wont change for sure and thats my 50mm. At 4k, thats my best buy. The oher 2 lens came with camera as a kit. What r ur thoughts?

Maybe you should add what you want to do with the camera, it will help with suggestions. I can't help much, I have a D60 with the 18-55 for general purpose and a Sigma 70-300 for long shots. Thinking of getting a 24mm and maybe a wide-angle. Lastly maybe even a 18-200 with image stabilisation for action shots on the go in a range of situations.

24mm not wide enough? I agree Prime lenses are superior to zooms, space and weight must be taken into account. For me a 28mm, 50mm and a 135mm are my choices for primes. Buy the best you can afford and and keep them for longer, buy what you use most first.

If you don't know that you need something then you probably don't. ;)

I don't really buy into the whole primes are better than zooms ideology. It used to be the case but these days zooms are fast and sharp, you're paying more but they bring a lot to the table.

Good choice- i have tested out the 55-200 by swopping it for a few weeks with a buddy for the 70-300 and I really missed the 70-300:( The 55-200 is kind of not useful as its zoom is a bit short for my needs and the 55 is still too long for indoors, so it really doesn't work for me. I quiet like the idea of the 18-200 as an all purpose lense, but think a wide angle is on my list first. I reckon the Sigma 10-20, its the one I am angling towards, but haven't had the chance to try it out properly yet.

I see a lot of you guys go for the sigma lens. Is it cos of price or the fact that its good and price is better. Sigma 10-20 for wide angle is not bad. i will look at that too, any other wide angles

Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. Legend lens but just as difficult to get your hands on in SA, usually go for about R6500.
