First off - I would like to thank you guys for a very informative and friendly site. The posts are helping me a lot.

I need to set up a decent connection from home. The wireless solution, initially looked like the way to go - but taking my current physical location and the posts in the forums into consideration - I am starting to think that ADSL might be a better solution.

This is what I had in mind - any comments and suggestions would be much apreciated.

HomeDSL 512 R599/month
Axxess 30Gb R599/month

Total cost per month R 1 198
(Excl. equipment & installation)

At this point it seems that I can get the company I work for, to susidize about R600 per month - because I will mainly use the connection for work related up and downloads.

For work I will need this connection to do a 100MB download every night. And afterwards I will need to do an approximate upload of 120MB (7 days a week). Will this set-up be sufficient? Sorry if my question seems dumb - but I do not know how long the actual down and up-loads are going take me (and I obviously need this to happen quickly - as this will only be done after I return from a full day at the office. The last thing I want to do is work from 07:00 to 01:00 7 days a week - if you catch my drift.).

I will also need this solution to be a cost effective as possible (as you can see I will be covering some of these expenses out of my own pockect - as I can promise you there is going to be plenty of private use of this - nudge nudge wink wink) any suggestions for cutting down on the price are welcome.

Thanks for a brilliant forum - I just wish I could find a similar solution - without having to support the big T.

Thanks in advance for any advice and comments

Kewl will look into it now. Damn that was a quick reply thanks.

No benefit in going UUNet unless you will need more than 30 Gigs.

Total cost is actually R599 + R89 (compulsory analogue line rental) + R599 = R1287

512k line has 256k upload speed (usually more though) which means you can upload 120 megs in just over an hour. You could get the 384 package which has 128k upload which will take you a few hours to upload 120 megs but will cost you R150 less per month.

256k running at 90% (accepted standard) will upload around 101.25meg, 128k would be around 51.65 meg

However, I'm pretty sure that you will be able to get better than that :D

Go for the 384k - costs less and the speed difference is minimal.. that with a 10GB Axxess account or summin similar would be perfect.

btb, there's also a matter on how fast your server is, if it's a 32k connection to your server you will definately save some cash and go for the lowest option etc

Thanks for all the comments and ideas. I might opt for the 384 package - instead of the 512. I am not too concerned about the upload speeds (Uploads will start by the time I'm done with my work - so I'll start the upload and go to bed then check it in the morning.)

I'll start of with the axxess 10GB Account and see how this goes - I am however convinced I'll act like a kid in a candy store when I have access to a decent internet connection for once. Do Axxess allow add-ons once you've reached your cap?

Once again thanks you guys - great forum!
