YouTube cracks down on ad blockers

That sounds quite counter-intuitive looking at how the average person uses YT in a procrastinating way, unless done for times of expected internet downtime, like being on a flight or something.
YouTube likes to censor people, so things they do disappear from YT, in which case downloading certainly has it's benefits

Most of your vids are ad free? I thought YT might put ads on demonetized vids too, just with (obviously) zero commision to the uploader.

I watch a lot of YT so this cheap subscription is totally worth it. Getting YT Music included means no need for Spotify, so it works out even cheaper.
I don't think they make any advertising revenue from demonetised vids.

Correct. Any video with no ads, you can be sure it's demonetised. You will also notice such videos will never show ads even if all adblocks are disabled.
Not that I would know because I haven't seen a YT advert since 2019

I use an iPad from time to time and that's where I suffer the ads now. The iPad is basically just used when I don't feel like sitting in front of a computer or a TV. I noticed a few videos, some old, and the rare recently posted one have no ads. Usually those videos do not align with Google's views, but not enough to be deleted

So I don’t fit the average profile ...

Not having time to sit in front of the computer, wondering what to watch helps, so does knowing what I want to watch.

Those cases should be rare though, unless everything one watches is controversial political or copyrighted stuff for eg.

You sure you didn't get premium in 2019 and forgot about it? I guess it's technically possible to not see an ad in 4 years, but extremely unlikely.

Not copyrighted stuff.
Lately, well since 2022, Google has a problem with everything, even blowing stuff up in your yard for fun is grounds for demonetization.
When I used to have a YT channel they demonetized one of my science experiment videos and slapped an age restriction on it. Yet the experiment is prescribed in CAPS for Grade 7.
Since moving and having a lot of excitement in my life dealing with life's issues and my family I haven't really bothered to make content, and now I don't feel like it.
If and when Peertube and Odysee make the cut and actually have viewers, then I will dabble again.

Subscriptions are a bane. It's the easiest way to make money these days and you can see it leaking into everything. It's no longer pay for what you use, but is now pay a fixed rate (and sometimes an additional cost for what you use)

You can see it everywhere. In cape town you got 'access to electricity' subscription like service.
Music has gone that way to, you no longer pay for the music you want but subscribe to a service.

I see this trend in the UK. It's no longer buy flea treatment, you subscribe to it and it's shipped to you. Same with the vet. Once off visit is 2x the price of a subscription to the vet where you get quarterly 'free' visits on your yearly subscription.

Even lawyers, ie. LegalWise. Expect more of type of thing to come around as it makes good business sense and profits (don't forget to subscribe to checkers 60 plus!).

It's not surprising that youtube would want to press this, it's be most stable way to keep an income without being at the whims of advertisers.

Youtube has a bigger problem though. Storage costs only go up as millions of videos are uploaded. Processing costs go up as well, not to mention the anti-copyrighted machine getting more and more content to match onto as studios produce more content. It's costs will always be going up. You'll find ads or 'better quality with premium plus" will eventually follow this path. I also think they might do what microsoft is doing and start deleting accounts/videos/data that are inactive.

We've already seen google do some sneaky things with gmail now sharing google one storage (where in the past, gmail was unlimited storage)

People can argue that it's not much, but when you start adding up all the subscription enforced these days (disney+, netflix, hulu+, amazon prime, checkers 60, xbox gamepass) it starts to get very expensive very quickly. It's a hard sell to change from free with few ads to paid/many annoying ads.

YouTube Premium price increases in select markets

YouTube started a massive campaign against ad blockers, preventing those who use them from viewing content. The company urged users to opt for the Premium tiers instead that have no ads, among other benefits.

Today, customers from all corners of the world, started receiving an email that their monthly fee will increase. As of November 1, YouTube Premium is getting a price hike in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, Germany, Poland, and Turkey. This applies to all tiers – Premium and Music Premium.

The price increase will apply to new users while existing customers will get “at least three extra months” before seeing the change in their bills. YouTube said in the email the decision wasn't made lightly and the increase will “continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists” people watch.

They want to even try and extend this ridiculous business model to your car and your graphics card.

Youtube benefits from views, even pirate views. Because they tell their advertisers they have billions of views, even if many are pirate, so what. People then want to advertise there. Secondly even pirate views can expose a company, for example reviews and product placement videos, will expose the brand to eyeballs.
