A manhunt was underway for two armed robbers who broke into Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee's home in Erasmia, west of Pretoria, on Friday, police said.

The robbers first targeted another house in nearby Senorita Street but were interrupted by police, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

"They fled the scene and left a blue Mercedes Benz."

In the car, which was reported stolen in the area earlier in the week, police found equipment used for housebreaking.

The robbers apparently proceeded to Abramjee's house in Johann Strauss Street, where they jumped an electric fence before robbing the Abramjees of a car at gunpoint.

"As they were driving out of the premises, they fired several shots, and a shoot-out with the owner of the house [Abramjee] ensued," Dlamini said.

"Police responded within a few minutes but the suspects had already fled."

Abramjee's car had not been recovered by 2.30pm, but police were following several leads.

No one was injured in either of the robberies.

Dlamini appealed to anyone with information about where the robbers could be to contact Crime Stop.

Always amazing how quickly the cops react when it's a high profile case.

Yep jus so amazazing, look at the hijack that happened in JHB inner city surely it would have been easy to get the jackers.........

Choppers, flying squads, dozens of police - happens only in those high-profile media cases. Would really be great if SAPS were to provide this type of service to the average Joe.

Abramjee robbers held

Two men have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at the Pretoria home of Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Brigadier Neville Malila said three men were caught in Atteridgeville on Monday and two of them had been positively linked to robberies at two homes in Erasmia, including Abramjee's.

"They were arrested for a spate of house robberies, burglaries, and hijackings around Pretoria."

Police seized three stolen cars, two unlicensed firearms, ammunition and money at the men's homes.

On Friday morning, armed robbers broke into Abramjee's house, demanded the keys to his BMW and fired shots while they reversed out of the garage.

Earlier that morning, the robbers had targeted another house in nearby Senorita Street, but police interrupted them.

Malila said the men were caught following various leads and tip-offs.

Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said they were being linked to several cases in the Pretoria area and that more charges could follow.

Abramjee commended residents for blowing the whistle and urged them to continue doing so.

"We must now ensure that the suspects are convicted and punished."

The men, aged between 22 and 37, would appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges including extortion.

They had allegedly tried to buy a docket from the police, said Malila.

Abramjee’s influence queried in court

Questions were raised about CrimeLine head Yusuf Abramjee’s influence on the police and police matters while he testified in the Pretoria Central Regional Court in the trial of two men accused of robbing him and his family at their Erasmia home.

Abramjee was being cross-examined by the legal representative of Matsau Motsepe, 29, who along with Robert Moeti, also 29, is facing charges of armed robbery with aggravated circumstances.

Moeti faces three additional charges. He is accused of corruption after allegedly attempting to bribe the investigating officer handling their case to dispose of the docket.

He is also accused of being in the illegal possession of two firearms and ammunition.

The pair allegedly climbed over an electric fence and jumped over a wall at Abramjee’s home and held his family at gunpoint. The incident ended in a shoot-out.

Bronwynne Forbay put it to Abramjee that the CrimeLine head had an influence on the police force, and this could have led to his matter being considered a high-profile case.

Abramjee responded by saying that the only reason he had been influential was because of the role he played in the fight against crime.

“Yes, I am a well-known person. I have been involved in the fight against crime for a large portion of my life,” the court was told.
