Johannesburg - A protest in the Zandspruit informal settlement near Honeydew continued on Wednesday, Johannesburg metro police said.

"Protest action continued the entire night," said Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

He said that Beyers Naude Drive, between Johan and Peter roads, was still blocked off due to the protest, and advised motorists to use alternative routes.

On Tuesday, residents barricaded roads with burning tyres and stones in a protest against the removal of their shacks.

Captain Doniah Mothutsane said residents had illegally erected shacks along Beyers Naude Drive, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.

She said metro police had removed their structures earlier in the day, which caused the residents to protest. Police had met residents about the matter last week.

A bakkie and an old vehicle which was parked at a petrol station in the area had been torched.

No arrests had been made yet and no injuries were reported.

Police were monitoring the area, said Mothutsane

Went through there at 7am. Was fine, lotsa cops, lotsa left overs on the road from whatever the hell they burnt.

No real issue at the moment

They're part of the 5% becoming impatient for services...

Be happy, it shows that the ANC has done a sterling job of running this country.

BEYERS NAUDE CLOSED DUE TO PROTESTS

Part of Beyers Naude Drive has been closed due to violent protests by residents of the Zandspruit informal settlement, Johannesburg metro police said on Tuesday.

Motorists were advised to avoid Beyers Naude Drive, which was closed off between Peter Road and Johan Street, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Police were monitoring the situation.

The reason for the protest was unclear, Minnaar said.

Two weeks ago, it was closed and took me 1.5 hrs to drive through alternative detour route. Normally it would take less than 2min to drive between Johan and Peter road.

I was driving through there on a saterday morning about three weeks ago and you know those big concrete barricades was smack in the middle of the road.
My question is how the F@$% do the move those things???

That red-shirt guy is obviously just clearing the road of burning rubble.
