Zenvo has shown its new hypercar & it’s Mjølner-named engine/

Zenvo Aurora begins new era with 1850bhp hybrid V12

Hybridised 6.6-litre quad-turbo 12-pot powers the Danish firm's latest creation to a claimed 280mph

The arrival of the Zenvo Aurora marks the rebirth of the niche Danish supercar maker as it moves away from the brutalist ST1 and TSR models that have defined its 16-year history.

“We sat down in the beginning and questioned what this car should be,” chairman and chief commercial officer Jens Sverdrup told Autocar. “Why should I buy this car? Why a Zenvo?”

The answer it landed on was a whopping great V12, measuring 6.6 litres in displacement and packing a quartet of turbochargers. Named Mjølner, after Thor’s hammer, it produces 1250bhp at 8000rpm before thwacking against the redline 1800rpm later.

“If an alien happens to land at a racetrack and they hear a couple of [our] V12s, they will have their hairs standing up and tears running from their eyes,” Sverdrup said. “We are emotional beings, and [the sound] matters.”

“It’s the last chance” to produce such an extravagant engine, he added, but an element of hybridisation was still required to ensure compliance with the upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations. To this end, the fastest Aurora receives three 200bhp electric motors – integrated into the powertrain and one on each front wheel – bumping total system output to 1850bhp.

Be afraid: the 280mph Zenvo Aurora has finally been unleashed

Papa’s got a brand new bag… actually two, and both are wild V12 hybrids

It’s been named after the stunning Northern Lights – the Aurora Borealis – but prospective owners will likely see stars upon their first encounter with the throttle. Because this new Zenvo is about as extreme a road car as you can get.

Well, one of them is. There are two versions of this new ‘car’: welcome the new Zenvo Aurora Tur, and Zenvo Aurora Agil. While they service different ambitions – the former built for long distance road trips, the latter for attacking the track – both are armed with a brand new V12 engine.

Slotted into a brand-new bespoke chassis and clothed in the barest of carbon fibre suits, the end result is less a ‘car’ and – in ‘Tur’ guise – a 1,850bhp insect capable of 0-62mph in 2.3s, 0-186mph in 9s and 0-248mph (!) in 17s. Flat out in this ‘road car’, you’re looking at the scary end of 280mph.

Actually looks fairly scary too. Zenvo design boss Christian Brandt has lent on the company’s past but also to its future, deploying classic Danish philosophy – simplicity – into a ‘skeletal’ form. “We wanted to showcase as much of the chassis, the engine and the suspension as we could,” he said.

Zenvo Aurora Tur

Unveiled on the eve of 2023 Monterey Car Week, the Zenvo Aurora is a milestone moment. Aurora marks the lightest and most powerful road car Zenvo Automotive has ever produced, while also marking the start of a new era for the Danish brand, with a ground-up, all-new design of hypercar, with a genuine no compromise approach to performance.

Named after and the lightweight, fast, and beautiful nature of the rare light phenomenon, Aurora Borealis, the Zenvo Aurora is designed with driving pleasure in mind. An unfiltered connection from the driver seat to the road.

Built on an all-new ZM1 modular monocoque design from Zenvo, developed with carbon structure experts Managing Composites, every parameter is maximised to the threshold of limitations and compromise. As such, and to ensure no compromise between comfort and track focus, Aurora launches with two different approaches launched simultaneously. Each meet the uncompromising brief, while offering owners the option of which style of driving and design they prefer. The aggressively styled Zenvo Aurora Agil is complimented by the beautifully elegant Zenvo Aurora Tur.

Both models feature a flowing, aerodynamically led, chassis design, managing and channelling airflow cleanly over, under and through the structure itself. The clean lines of the Zenvo Aurora Tur are a grand touring variant, with a beautifully sculpted exterior and dynamics set up for stability and comfortable road driving. In contrast, the Agil bodystyle follows the same simplistic and elegant design philosophy, but is a more extreme translation, as the bodywork cleverly manages airflow. This delivers high levels of downforce, with a clear focus on track driving.

The Zenvo Aurora will unleash its 6.6-litre V12 at Goodwood in 2025

High-powered, high-revving hypercar to debut on famous hill... better get some Black Friday ear defenders in preparation

You know Zenvo, that Danish marque which builds 1,000bhp+ supercars with rear wings that breakdance? Its next production model, the Aurora, is confirmed for a proper debut at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed. And guess what? It won’t just take a stand space either, it’ll be a full dynamic run up the hill. Yippee!

That means we’ll get our first look at the new 6.6-litre quad-turbo hybrid V12 in action, where its driver will hopefully stretch its 10,000rpm legs the distance. And ring some eardrums, more importantly.

The Aurora will come in two trim levels: the softer GT-focused ‘Tur’ (1,500bhp) and the full-blown time attack ‘Agil’ (1,800bhp). That difference in power is made up by an extra pair of electric motors, and all in, the Agil is targeting a top speed of 280mph…

…provided you’re brave enough to actually get there, that is. Because the Aurora Agil is projected to hit 62mph in 2.3s, 186mph in 9s and 248mph in 17s. That’s ridiculous. For perspective, the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut currently leads the way for 0-248mph runs at 18.82s, while the Rimac Nevera takes 21.3s. Or walking pace, if Zenvo’s estimates come true.

Could the 1,850bhp Zenvo Aurora get a proper manual gearbox? Possibly, says boss

Zenvo announces Brit engineers Ricardo will supply an automated manual for its mad new hypercar. Plus: more on its future

Quick update from Zenvo, the Danish hypercar firm that really wants to be Koenigsegg when it grows up. It has announced another technical partner for the Aurora hypercar. This time it’s Ricardo, the British transmission experts, who are going to equip the 1,850bhp machine with a gearbox that can, well, cope would be a good start.

Unlike its rival across the Oresund Bridge, Zenvo isn’t throwing multiple clutches at the problem – it believes one is enough. So it’s an automated manual, seven speeds and hybridised as there’s an electric motor buried in there as well to do torque fill and reversing duties.

But that’s not all, said Chairman Jens Sverdrup. “A manual gearbox? Yes, that could be on the horizon. We have room within the casing, we’re just not sure how it will work in the dimensions yet.” That’s right three pedal fans - 1,850bhp and the opportunity to cock up shifts yourself with terrifyingly expensive consequences!

Whether that happens or not, the gearbox is mated to the 6.6-litre quad turbo V12 ‘Mjølner’ power unit. Yep, quad turbos like Bugatti had on the EB110. There’s a reason: Sverdrup loved the EB110.
