Zille said yesterday that she will head the party's new national list for the National Assembly.

Additionally, if the DA retains the Western Cape , Zille will remain premier.

Federal executive chairman James Selfe said Zille's national list nomination did not preclude her from also heading the list for Western Cape premier.

"[It is] by virtue of the fact that she is entitled in terms of our regulations to be number one on any or all lists that the DA has."

Selfe said nominees could occupy a position on both lists, but if elected to one of them, their names would be "erased" from the other list.

Selfe said "broadly speaking" there were a "handful" of people who could serve on both. These were mostly premiership candidates, he said.

The decision by the party for Zille to top the list follows Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele's U-turn on the DA's offer that she stand as its presidential candidate.

Zille denied that the DA had suffered from the debacle.

"If anything we will gain 1% or 2%, because Agang is virtually out of the water now," she said.

The leader of the ANC caucus in the Cape Town city council, Tony Ehrenreich, said Western Cape mayor Patricia de Lille should be held criminally liable for any injury or deaths caused by the city's neglect of beaches catering mostly to the poor.

Ehrenreich said he has filed a complaint with the office of the public protector to look into Cape Town's spending patterns.

He claims "hundreds of millions of rand" are spent on facilities at "white areas" like Sea Point, while areas like Monwabisi are neglected.

He said the water break that the city built at Monwabisi creates rip currents and endangers lives.

Acting Cape Town mayor Ian Neilson said the city spent R6-million on upgrading Monwabisi Resort, including new chalets.

Maybe that thing with Agang was to actually pull the rug out from under them and totally negate them as a party?
'Cos now they are virtually useless and nullified as a serious party.

For that to be true, then Ramphele would have to be an undercover DA agent as it was her mistakes that lead to the failure (ie, not informing the leadership within her party). I enjoy a good conspiracy theory, but this one is not very water tight.

I think Agang (and Ramphele) definitely came off the worst after that bungle. Zille and the DA managed to somewhat decently escape much harm.

One botched plan does not make them a useless party.

From a strategeic pont of view, being Premier is far more useful than being Leader of the Opposition in parliament. Until such a time as the DA can threaten ANC dominance in Parliament, the leader of the opposition post is a largely ceremonial job, which is why they put a token in there. Watty Watson as Chief Whip has more power IMO.

Well, not necessarily. I think if you can have someone competent in Parliament to drive their agenda as opposition then it's a useful role. If you only had 1 strong leader and you had to choose where to deploy them then yes, Premier would probably be a better choice.

Where did that article come from....

It starts of with Zille being on both lists and then Tony pops out in the middle 'beaching' about the beaches......

Tony really is one of the worst leaders in the ANC. Every time he opens his mouth the DA gets more votes.
He has basically being exiled to the WC, alongside Fransman. The only person more useless than Tony

Is that not the job of the chief whip?

Making sure the party reps vote a certain way is "driving the party agenda" as you put it IMO

Sure, but you'd think most MPs are there to drive the party agenda, anyway.

The Parliamentary leader can outline further political goals, alternative solutions, hold the executive to account, coordinate the party agenda in Parliament (beyond voting), etc.

But what are you getting at, actually? I merely indicated why I think it could be beneficial to have strong leaders as both Premier and Parliamentary leader.
