Western Cape Premier Helen Zille is to sue Julius Malema after the ANC Youth League president accused the DA leader of "suffering from Satanism".
Malema made the comment during a rally at the University of Johannesburg on Tuesday. He also claimed that Zille was responsible for the demolition of churches in Khayelitsha.
On Tuesday a delegation of ANC MPs visited Khayelitsha after complaints from churches about places of worship being destroyed.
Religious leaders claimed that the city's Land Invasion Unit had, since late last year, demolished churches in informal structures.
Zille said on Wednesday: "I have asked my attorney to sue Malema. I sent my attorney a formal written instruction in the early hours."

She said she had "never demolished a church nor given any instruction to demolish a church".
"Someone must stop Malema in his tracks. He thinks he is above the law, whether it is evading taxes or inciting racial hatred.
"I have been to church services in shacks and in tents. I have been in discussion after discussion with the mayor on this issue.
"He has gone a bridge too far. I am a Christian and being called a Satanist is nothing less than hate speech. He must learn very quickly that we are equal before the law, and that we must all abide by the law.
"If he is allowed to continue, he could ignite serious civil conflict," she said.
The slur is the latest in a long string of insults directed at Zille by the youth league.
Shortly after her inauguration as premier last year, the youth league called her a "racist girl" whose male MECs were "her boyfriends and concubines so that she can continue to sleep around with them".
On Wednesday, Zille's staffers confirmed that she was a church-goer and a choir member, who had worked "extremely hard" to resolve the church matter in Khayelitsha while she was mayor.
Zille said on Tuesday that, upon inquiry, the City of Cape Town had told her that some independent churches had illegally built their structures on council land and had been classified as "land invasions".
She said on Wednesday: "We launched a process to find an appropriate way of releasing land to independent churches, given the fact that there are literally scores of them, all with competing claims, on land ear-marked for other critically needed other developments. It's not as simplistic as it looks - it had to go through a proper legal process.
"I have requested an urgent report about where this process is now within the city administration and why it is taking so long."
Malema also said yesterday that he was not above the law and the SA Revenue Service was welcome to arrest him if it believed he was guilty of tax evasion.
