JOHANNESBURG - A man in Zimbabwe has been sent to jail for nine years for killing a python and hanging its skin on his dining room wall.

Stiff sentences are being handed down on those found guilty of possessing or killing pythons, pangolins and other endangered animals.

Pythons are a protected species in Zimbabwe, and killing them attracts a heavy sentence.

The Chronicle is reporting that 46-year old Elvis Khoza will spend the next nine years in jail.

i remember a snake was on our property coming close to us on Breedenkamps farm in Zimbabwe. a friend was with us a kid actually killed it easily somehow.

Pythons are protected in SA aswell.
I remember doing a patrol in the Ellisras/Marken area whilst doing a camp. We came around a corner and there was a telephone pole across the road. Thinking it was a ambush we evacuated the vehicle, a Bedford, and took cover.

Then we saw it was a python crossing the road. One of the troopies threw a rock at it a it died.
He was charged and sent to DB.
This was 85/86 ish.

Another was given 9 years for being in possession of a live pangolin.

Some of the comments had me in stiches. This chap is worried Zim might become the laughing stock of the world.

This is just madness, nine years for possesing a lousy pangolin! Rapists and other hoodlums are getting far much less sentences and some even go scot free. This sentence should be reviewed as a matter of urgence before we become a laughing stock to the whole world!

Far too late for that sentiment Mr K
