ZTE ban threatens access to Android

This may affect local carriers I'm sure some of their Carrier branded phones are made by ZTE

The article does not state why the ban?

It links to the article that does...

The U.S. government said Chinese telecommunications-gear maker ZTE Corp. violated the terms of a sanctions settlement and imposed a seven-year ban on purchases of crucial American technology needed to keep it competitive.

The Commerce Department determined ZTE, which was previously fined for shipping telecommunication equipment to Iran and North Korea, subsequently paid full bonuses to employees who engaged in the illegal conduct, failed to issue letters of reprimand and lied about the practices to U.S. authorities, the department said.

ZTE shipped telecommunication equipment illegally to North Korea and Iran, there were sanctions against these countries, which ZTE ignored even rewarded staff for ignoring US sanctions.

Never liked ZTE

What can google/USA do if ZTE continues to use Android? I doubt there is very much since its open source.

Block access to the play store and play services.

I believe even that is not 100% possible as there are ways to circumvent this. Legally speaking of course they would be breaking the law, but does ZTE and the typical chinese organisation even care about the law?
