South Africa celebrated 16 years of democracy with President Jacob Zuma offering a stark reminder that the effects of unjust apartheid laws lingered.

"Our people still have to daily confront the impact of the law," Zuma said in Pretoria.

Addressing thousands of people gathered at the Union Buildings for Freedom Day celebrations, he said the Act -- which marked the institutionalising of racial partitioning of cities and towns -- was still in existence 20 years after it was repealed.

"Many still live in areas once designated for black people, away from economic opportunities and civic services," he said.

Zuma highlighted that the cost of transport alone took a heavy toll on the lives of the poor.

This was one example among many others which Zuma said needed to be addressed to ensure that people "enjoy[ed] the fruits of freedom".

The crowd broke into song just before Zuma delivered his speech.

They were waving South African flags, some had flags draped around their necks.

The mood was jubilant.

Various artists performed on stage, including Maskandi artist, Phuza Ekhemisi.

Did he not just said the other day that we can not do this anymore?

Show me where he blamed apartheid? He said their were still indifferences. His party can only be the only one to blame though.

+1 In his previous statement he said we cannot continue to blame apartheid for our current situation. Here he is saying that some of the affects which apartheid brought about are still in place.

People are quick to chuck words in his mouth. He actually spoke the honest truth in this case.

speaking to the crowd. Wind bag that is what he is. SOoooooooooooo scared the village idiot might not like what he is saying so he always goes back to make it seems like he meant something else.

Oh FFS, you epitomize the types who are frequenting this forum more and more now that all the right-wing websites are being closed down. Where did I say the ANC were saints? I agree with you, they're not saints but neither were the previous lot.

Wtf Dasher! This article has nothing to do with corruption. The thread title says Zuma blamed apartheid. Not once did he say that. Don't come with your generalised BS on ANC corruption when what he says is true (and I do believe the ANC is corrupt) - but to spew ANC corruption as an excuse for this thread is pathetic. You must be the idiot (no disrespect).

I think you got me confused with Gawain,He can stop the effects of apartheid if he just digs a little deeper into his wallet and not his pants.

Mila, the effects do remain. He's not blaming apartheid! - it's the fscken truth. Sure he can use what ever means of his personal wealth to rectify the past, but keep on topic.

he said they face the laws everyday.

yes the effects is still here but it's not only on black people. Whiteys carry a load because of it too. The problem is the load get heavier for everybody every day because of weak politicians and ruling party. He just farts what the crowd wants to hear. and saying things like that just makes the load heavier and makes the devide bigger. Maybe we should blame the speach writers. We know he reads every speach and I wonder sometimes if he knows what he is saying.
