PRETORIA – President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday came to the defence of National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega describing her as “absolutely wonderful, confident and competent”.
He was speaking at a briefing in Pretoria ahead of his trip to the G20 summit in Russia this week.
Phiyega faced a barrage of criticism after appointing Mondli Zuma as the new Gauteng Police Commissioner on Saturday.
Just hours later, she removed him after it emerged he was awaiting trial on a drunk driving charge.
Zuma believes the commissioner has done a good job, saying, “She’s competent; I think she’s able to do her job. So far, I think she’s absolutely wonderful.”
The president says the appointment of an awaiting-trial official is a mistake, which she immediately resolved.
“You have a case where she said, ‘Ok, even if the mistake is there, I will investigate.’ She immediately acted.”
Zuma says it’s premature to say how this mistake happened, but he expects a report soon.
