Johannesburg – A senior employee of the Free State government has been suspended for his alleged participation and statements at a protest against President Jacob Zuma – actions his bosses deemed as “flagrant disrespect”.

Cope plans to take legal action against Free State Premier Ace Magashule’s government after its acting national treasurer, Teboho Loate, was suspended this week for “disrespectful utterances” against Zuma on April 12.

Loate is a chief director in the province’s Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

He was placed on immediate suspension earlier this week by his head of department, Stanley Malope, for statements he made on the National Day of Action in Pretoria.

Thousands of people, led by opposition parties and civil society organisations, had descended on the Union Buildings to demand Zuma’s resignation.

The Star is in possession of a series of communications between Loate and Malope, wherein the “flagrant disrespect” remained a point of contention.

However, Malope refused to explain what Loate had done to allegedly disrespect the president.

Loate’s saga began late last month when he received a precautionary letter, which The Star has seen, on April 24 from Malope in which he said he should explain why he should not be placed on special leave.

“I was made aware of alleged utterances by yourself on or about April 12, 2017 in which you displayed flagrant disrespect to the president it is also alleged that this behaviour will continue in the future.”

He asked for the specific circumstances under which he made the allegations and “where does the president, as the head of the executive and as a public office-bearer, feature in this intended precautionary suspension against me?”

Free State premier faces revolt

Johannesburg - Free State Premier Ace Magashule faces a revolt for his alleged plan to “purge” government employees who participated in the May Day protests in Bloemfontein where President Jacob Zuma was booed and heckled.

It has since emerged that Magashule has taken his alleged witch-hunt a step further by targeting employees who participated in the recent protests to demand Zuma’s resignation. The actions at the Union Buildings, led by political parties and civil society organisations and attended by thousands, were triggered by the President’s cabinet reshuffle.

Magashule said following the booing, which led to the cancellation of the May Day speeches, he was going to study video footage.

The premier is said to have last week summoned all heads of department in the province to his boardroom, where he allegedly instructed them to start preparing dismissal letters for the dissenters.

On Friday, it was reported that Teboho Loate, the chief director in the province’s Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, was suspended for his alleged participation and statements at a protest against Zuma.

Now, several employees in the provincial government are said to be mobilising against the alleged plan to purge them, which they say is draconian and motivated by factional politics. They accuse Magashule of waging a proxy war to protect Zuma.

Magashule forms part of the “Premier League”, a clandestine political grouping that consists of Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza and his North West counterpart, Supra Mahumapelo.

So determined are the Free State workers to fight Magashule that a WhatsApp chat group has been created to amplify their defiance. They have threatened to go to court to fight what they see as unfair dismissals and discrimination.

“So don’t worry about what Ace and his cronies are doing. Know you are protected by the CCMA, the majority of the bargaining councils and the labour courts against his vindictive actions,” reads a WhatsApp message.

Official goes to court following suspension over Zuma protest

Bloemfontein - The government official who was suspended after taking part in a protest march against President Jacob Zuma, has turned to the Labour Court to have the suspension lifted.

Teboho Loate, chief director of sport, arts and culture in the Free State, is also asking the court to declare his suspension illegal and unconstitutional, Netwerk24 reported.

Loate said in a statement to the court that he had been at the Union Buildings in Pretoria during a protest march by opposition parties and community organisations on April 12. The protest was to demand that Zuma resign. Loate said he had put in a day's leave to be in Pretoria.

Loate is a member of Cope's national executive committee.

While he was in Pretoria, a journalist asked him: "When will this end?"

"It will end one day," he replied.

Suspension letter

A few days later, a friend phoned and told him the department's top structure (who are all African National Congress members) wanted to get rid of him.

On April 24 he received a letter from the head of his department, Stanley Malope, asking him to provide reasons why he should not be suspended.

According to the letter, he had made disrespectful comments with regard to the president, which could constitute a breach of his code of conduct. It allegedly was also clear that this kind of behaviour would continue.

He responded, but was nevertheless suspended on May 2.

More taxpayer money down the drain to try and prop up Zuma. A field day will be had with Ace at the CCMA.
