Need some advice ...

I was thinking of getting the zyxel modem with a wirelss dongle ...

firstly where can i get a wireless dongle from (one that looks like a bluetooth dongle?), how much do they cost?

lastly can i set this zyxel modem/router up to my pc without connecting the modem via ethernet, as my ethernet ports are not working on my motherboard ... :(

Digital Planet have a promotion on at the moment with Netgear products. If you purchase one of their USB adapters you get a R100 voucher. The 54Mbps USB adapter should effectively cost you ~R87 or so. You could also look at one of the Netgear routers ...

You don't usually need to have a working ethernet port to setup a wireless router provided you have a working wireless card or USB adapter on one computer that is within range i.e. within 10~20m of the router.

Go to www.digitalplanet.co.za and refresh the homepage several times until you see the Netgear advert or otherwise just look at the Netgear product that you are interested in and you should see some writing in red regarding the R100 voucher. Post again if you are still having trouble.

i just went the easier route .... convert my line to a 24 month contract and i got the zyxel for free ... and the network wireless card that was given to me 9guy thought it might not be working) ... actually works perfect ... so ended up costing me nothing ... (so far ... untill i get the telkom bill)

problem nw though the modem synhcs ... stays connected and then it looses the link (dsl light goes off ... ) ... than picks up the dsl again and than off again ...

What speed is your line connecting at?

Can you post your linestats i.e. your upstream and downstream attenuation and SNR margins. If one of the SNR margins is near 6dB this could be causing the dropouts.

DSL Up 4096 kbps / 384 kbps
LAN Up 100M/Full Duplex
WLAN Active 54M

noise margin upstream: 14 db
output power downstream: 19 db
attenuation upstream: 20 db

doing test on the router itself i get the above ....

whats strange is that with the old filter on the cordless phone the adsl link will bomb out every few seconds and then come on again, without any activity on the phone ...

plugging in the new microfilter that came with the zyxel, the adsl connection is stable until someone picks up the cordless to make a call and then it kills the adsl ....

(have to admit the "line" connection of the filter is going to the cordless ...while the phone connection (the female sorta connection) is going to the line ... ) .... i got the old two prong phone jack sorta connection... thinking now this could be the problem

QUESTION: is connecting the micro-filter "upside down" gonna make a difference????
