Huawei has unveiled its smartwatch – which it calls the Huawei Watch.

Powered by Android Wear, the device will work on smartphones running either Android 4.3 or later, or iOS 8.2 or later.

The watch is 42mm in diameter, features a touch-sensitive AMOLED display, and is coated in scratch-proof sapphire crystal and a cold-forged stainless steel frame.

Its crown is located at the two o’clock position.

Huawei’s smart watch will come three colours: rose gold, stainless steel, and black.

There is also a choice of straps – including stainless steel mesh, stainless steel links, rose gold and black-plated stainless steel links, and brown and black leather.

Users can also fit any watch strap that has an 18mm-width lug.

The watch features a heart rate sensor and 6-axis motion sensor, which Huawei said can track walking, running, cycling, and mountain climbing.

The Huawei Watch can also download music for offline playback via Bluetooth, and can link up to wireless headphones.

Pre-orders for the watch are open in the US, where it will launch on 17 September.

The basic steel watch with a leather strap will sell for $349, while a gold-plated model with a metallic band costs $799.

South African availability and pricing will be announced at a later date.
