E-toll talks almost over
Consumers could go and buy their e-toll discs, as the transport department was busy concluding talks on the matter, Minister Ben Martins has said, Beeld reported on Tuesday.
Speaking at the launch of National Transport Month in Soweto on Monday, Martins said more precise plans around the future of e-tolling would be made public at a media briefing on Friday.
He declined to answer further questions on the issue, or be drawn on when the government planned to start with e-tolling.
On September 20 the Constitutional Court set aside the interim interdict halting e-tolling of Gauteng’s major roads, giving the SA National Roads Agency Ltd the right to start the process.
Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance spokesman Wayne Duvenhage said on Monday the review hearing of the e-tolling system would still take place in November. He urged motorists to wait for more clarity on the issue before purchasing e-tolling discs.
