E-toll talks coming to an end

What I don't get is why people are debating wether to buy e-tags or not.

Even if it does get implemented today, DON'T EVER BUY THE ****ING THINGS. Let them work for their Beemer money.

As I posted elsewhere: My big fear is that Government will convince the opposers to accept a low initial per kilometer rate for tolling, in return for their withdrawing their opposition. Firstly, this will mean the introduction, for the first time in SA, of the Urban Tolling concept. It will not be long before other major cities are coerced into following a similar strategy to raise money. Gauteng will be at a massive disadvantage to other provinces and the playing field will need levelling. In any case, a politician in Duban, Cape Town etc never met a tax the didn’t like. Secondly, the low initial rate of tolling will turn out to be the ‘thin end of the wedge’. Tolls will then be ratcheted upwards until government gets the revenue stream that they always intended to obtain. Urban Tolling must be nipped in the bud!

Talks over so quickly? Public should go buy e-tags now?

Seems like more of the same threats and steamroller tactics we saw from Sanral earlier in the year. Remember how that ended, those endless queues of people waiting to buy e-tags? Guess what .. it will happen again.

We will not accept such an expensive collection system when there are other more economic ways to collect the money. Also, publish the full list of companies that got tenders, we will not be part or support your corruption any longer.

We will not buy e-tags!!

Don't give two tosses about these talks... and even the outcome of the OUTA case...

Will NOT buy an eTag ever... They can snail mail me the invoices, and I will dispute every single one.

Consumers could go and buy their e-toll discs, as the transport department was busy concluding talks on the matter, Minister Ben Martins has said, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Minister Ben can go buy himself protection (a butt plug).

What's this about an etrolling disc? It was some sort of transceiver, now it's a disc? :wtf:

^ That !

Urban tolls have been around for a while via stormvoel and zambesi.

By adding it to the fuel levy so that people in PE have to pay for Gautengs extra lanes?

GPers need to pay for this, you can expect the rest of the country to pay for your local governments corruption.

The reality of it is that there is a huge debt that needs to be paid for the expansion of the N1, someone needs to pay it and I vote that those that use the road should pay, not the rest of the country.

Rubbish.
Guateng already subsidises other provinces from taxes.

Now you are proposing that these communities that can't even pay for themselves (and need subsidies) are to pay for your roads? Take from the poor to pay for the rich?

Gauteng has a hell of a lot of poor, a lot of whom have to use the N1 daily to travel from Pretoria to Johannesburg. You're being ridiculously dim about this. Typical African mentality of take take take but never want to give anything back.
But of that's the mentality you want to take, then I shall paraphrase your statement: why should Gauteng pay for other provinces? You can't expect us to pay for your local government corruption.

And what .... the local ANC governments in the Eastern Cape and PE is doing a fantastic job? Who do you think have been paying for all the money that has been wasted on the EC crumbling health system? Not gonna get into this debate as it is off topic.....just saying...if you gonna throw mud......make sure your own house is clean .... or however the saying goes :-)

We already have differential fuel pricing so only add the levy for Gauteng.

You've just taken an extra lane on a highway, and don't want to pay for it? You have the 'African mentality'. Take and give nothing back.
