iPad hotspot for Vodacom, MTN enabled
iPad users with a Vodacom SIM in their tablet PC should be able to use the personal hotspot feature after they upgrade to iOS 7, a Vodacom spokesperson has told MyBroadband.
The “personal hotspot” menu is also displayed when an MTN SIM is inserted into an iPad 4 that has been updated to iOS 7.
However, the update to iOS 7 also patched a loophole that MyBroadband forum members were previously using to enable personal hotspot on their devices.
This means that Telkom Mobile subscribers are no longer able to jury-rig their iPads to provide a personal hotspot.
The status of Cell C’s personal hotspot support on iPad is unknown, though it was previously possible to simply add the “internet” access point name (APN) on an iPad’s mobile network settings page.
Cell C did not provide answers to questions on this by the time of publication.
The iPhone personal hotspot feature is available on all networks in South Africa.
Morkhans, the forum member who put together custom carrier bundles and wrote a guide on how to get hotspot and tethering support on iPads in South Africa has warned users about the problem.
“If you rely on your hotspot then don’t update unless there is an official carrier update,” Morkhans wrote.
Telkom Mobile said that it is in the process of finalising the configuration of the hotspot feature for iPad.
“Once this process has been completed the configuration will be made available to the public,” a spokesperson for Telkom Mobile told MyBroadband.
